I am shocked that Sam Mendes was not nominated! Gypsy was really shut out in general; just nominations in some of the main categories (Bernadette Peters for best actress in a musical, John Dossett for best actor in a musical, Gypsy for best Revival of a musical, and Tammy Blanchard for best featured actress in a musical)...no surprises. LOL NY1 sort of ruined the element of surprise (even though it was no surprise) by saying before the announcments were made that it was confirmed that Bernadette Peters was nominated.

It is nice to see that Flower Drum Song still received a couple of nominations, even though it closed early; and Hollywood Arms. How great that Michelle Pawk and John Dossett are both nominated this year...though I'm glad Michelle was nominated, it's a shame the play didn't get more (as I said, Linda Lavin shoud have gotten a nod).

For those of you who get "On Stage!", they are showing a special edition tonight with everyone's (on the show) take on the Tony nominations. It should be interesting to hear what some of them have to say about Bernadette (being that she has been sick); although the comments from that show have been kind towards Gypsy so far. That airs at 9:30 tonight.

I'd probably be rooting for Gypsy in all its categories anyway, but in my "completely unbiased opinion," having also seen Nine, Hairspray, and MOLM, I'd vote Gypsy all the way. The roles in Gypsy require more range and depth and the actors all delivered. If Peters can stay in good vocal health and give the kind of performance I saw the three nights I went, I really believe she should get the Tony over Winokur who sort of faded or gets overwhelmed by the other performers in Hairspray.

Let's just hope she's completely recovered now (it was a smart choice to take the extra days needed to beat the infection). I doubt all or even most of the Tony Voters have seen Gypsy yet; I know they all saw Hairspray, because they all went to see it on May 1st. I wonder if they will do that with Gypsy also? Like if they have a set date when a majority of voters go together?

I know from talking to one of the press agents for Gypsy that a majority of the Tony Voters are coming in the next few weeks (as opoposed to having already seen her).

I attended the show on Saturday night. Bernadette sounded a little nasal and congested and seemed to only be singing with about 3/4 of her voice. I couldn't figure out if that was all the voice she had at the time or if she was trying to conserve it. Well during Rose's Turn, I had my answer. She was definitely trying to conserve it. By the very first note of that song I knew she was singing full voice and was going all out for it (Tony Nominators were in the audience) and she did an amazing job. I think she did just right. She didn't take the chance of blowing out her voice during the first act and paced herself for the big ending. She acted the role extremely well during the entire evening just didn't use her voice as much to convey emotions but had to make other dramatic choices.

Hopefully after yesterday off, she will come back this week all better and be able to give 100% at all the performances.

Thanks for the latest report Moljul. I'm thinking those of us who don't live near NY should take up a collection for you and Christine and Cindy, etc. so you guys can keep checking in and countering the NYPost muckrackers. (j/k I have to save up so I can get back there myself.) What does Reidel do anyway hang out at the Shubert trying to get dirt?

All this attention, positive and negative, just reinforces what we all know -- that Peters is a STAR. Only stars elicit such strong reactions from people. Reidel wouldn't be attacking her if she wasn't a big enough name even Access Hollywood, ET and Extra all covered the opening, something which rarely happens anymore with Broadway shows unless you have Nicole Kidman taking off her clothes.

BTW how was the audience reaction to the show and Peters?

Well any money you want to throw my way would be appreciated. LOL I would definitey spend it wisely (on more tickets to Gypsy).

The audience response was pretty good. It improved through the night but I also think Bernadette improved through the night.

And I would guess that Reidel hasn't been anywhere near the Shubert which is why his articles are so full of lies because he clearly has no real idea of what is happening with the show. He only posts what he hears by others who probably haven't seen it either.

I really think Mendes should have gotten the nomination over David Leveaux of Nine. Leveaux may have given Nine a completely different look than the original, but I thought the production was often messy and for that Grand Canal sequence alone -- filling the stage with water and making the actresses cross the stage by moving and walking across chairs, he shouldn't be nominated. I also found the sound design to be poor especially when compared to Gypsy. When all of the women were onstage it was often difficult to figure out who was talking because there was little placement of the sound and the lighting and direction didn't help during those segments either.

Anyway there's my two cents about that nomination.
