Reidel's viciousness both infuriates and apalls me at the same time. I simply do not understand why the man is so full of poison.

Registered: 12/8/2002 | posted: 5/7/2003 at 10:33:34 AM ET Come to think of it, I really shouldn't have brought up this topic or even posted the link. Afterall, I'm giving Reidel what he wants and that is ATTENTION. I guess the best way to make a statement is to not say anything at all and completely ignore his articles. In the end that will say a much bigger statement. I was just completely annoyed (okay, MAD!) when I saw that stupid milk carton. Anyways, I'll try to be the bigger person and completely ignore Reidel and his ignorance from now on.

Registered: 4/1/2003 | posted: 5/7/2003 at 11:20:31 AM ET I simply can't understand Reidel's continuing vicious treatment of both Ms. Peters and this production of GYPSY. Aside from the obvious, bitter snipe towards N.Y. Times critic Ben Brantley, he seems almost determined to trash Bernadette and for some reason, deny the merits of the production and discourage people from buying tickets. His latest diatribe suggests that only Ben Brantley praised the production, and as we know, this not the case--even John Simon lavished praise on Ms. Peters' Mama Rose and the production, and USA Today's review was an absolute rave. Negativity in the press is nothing new, of course, but Reidel seems bent on destroying this production and causing embarrassment to Bernadette Peters. What I can't understand is how The New York Post, despite its reputation as a tabloid, can allow these obvious attacks to continue to fill Reidel's column space week after week.
I intend to write to the editor of The New York Post regarding this issue.

Sorry, but that is not the case here. Bernadette seems very happy and comfortable with the role. The woman is sick! Why can't that pea-brain get that through his head! She would be causing permanent damage to her vocal chords if she performed under those conditions...look what happened to Julie Andrews! She will never be able to sing again (at least not the way she use to), and she has said that she has somewhat lost her identity. I would hate for that to happen to Bernadette!
Maybe she should have the NY Post print up a copy of a Doctor's note just to prove she's sick (please note sarcasm).

| posted: 5/7/2003 at 12:46:37 PM ET All I can say guys is that he is a gossip columnist (never, never, never confuse him for any type of a journalist) and unfortunately the production of Gypsy and her unfortunate illness (timing as well as poor health) are exactly what he needs to make him happy. Just don't let any of what he says discourage you from believing what you all know to be true. She is an amazing, dedicated performer that has just become ill and hasn't quite kicked it yet.
Pep talk over.

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 5/7/2003 at 1:03:49 PM ET Linnie its ok, I can understand why you were upset to begin with. This guy is a jerk. Its one thing when you post your opinions but its another when you post FALSE info. and basically dig a performers name into the ground! Funny thing I noticed...the producer quotes in the article did not give his name.... as with the "anonymous" posts on this board...I think if you want your opinions to have any validity and credibility then why not post your (user)name? I'm wondering if this "disgruntled theatergoer" Colleen Janich, From Atlanta missed work to travel to NYC and see GYPSY...if so, sort of a double standard don't you think?
" Peters has, at best, a spotty track record when it comes to doing eight performances a week."
Really? Because Audra McDonald has quite the reputation for missing shows. As does Sutton Foster. She's going on...I think 4 weeks with out being sick and I know MANY who work with her or in this industry that are pretty shocked. Even Sutton herself has realized how many performances she has missed and has apologized to a few people. I know Reidel mentioned this in the article but Julie Andrews is also known for missing MANY performances (in Victor/Victoria). I can name MANY ensemble members who have missed MANY performances as well. I guess Bernadette's track record for AGYG doesn't count for much as far as Reidel goes...
The point is, people get sick, things happen. I know people pay a lot of money these days to see shows, but they've got to understand that what they're paying to see is LIVE theatre.
"When she's unhappy or uncomfortable, she tends to miss performances," the producer said.
Well, if that's not a blanket statement then I don't know what is... First of all, as far as I can tell...she's happier then ever. This role is a dream of a lifetime for her. Yes, she's tired, exhausted and even stressed out but she's worked through all of that. People are forgetting...when the show was beginning previews she hadn't had a day off for a LONG time.
I KNOW Bernadette would not just call out of Gypsy "sick" for no reason. I know how much it means to her to be there not only for her fans but for the company! I also heard her sing while she was incredibly sick a few weeks ago so its no secret she REALLY is sick!

I dont think any of us here are discouraged. All the responses posted so quickly DEFENDING Bernadette, I think prove that. WE know that what he writes is pretty much BS but unfortunately, many around the US probably don't. And because he does write for the NY POST and not a tabloid people may be more inclined to believe what he writes.
