Why wasn't Bernadette chosen for Mama Rose before this time? Angela L.in '74..and Tyne D.in'89..where was Bernadette!?Certainly she was in all ways capable of this role!

Well,seeing as many still think she looks to young for the role I'd hate to think of what they would have thought if she had attempted to play Mama Rose any earlier

yes, I would definitely agree. She would have been much too young looking to be Gypsy's mother. And certainly the way most people thought of Rose looking - actually much too old to have small children. She really needed to wait for Arthur Laurents to come up with the idea to reconceptualize Rose. Otherwise, I think she would still be waiting to play the role.

And she definitely was not capable of the role in '74. Her voice and her abilities had just not grown enough at that point. It definitely takes an actress with a great deal of performance experience to carry it off well.

She could've played Louise though in the 70's or whenever...

yes, and I think I remember reading somewhere that there was a plan to have a TV movie of Gypsy in the early 70s with Carol Burnett as Rose and BP as Louise.

Hi, could you elaborate on that? Because it really seemed to me that her "Mama" was really different from Bette Midler's "Mama".

I don't understand what you are asking. Are you saying Bernadette's Rose is different from Bette's because this new production is the brainchild of Arthur Laurents - to make Rose younger looking, less of a truck driver personality and more sexy and vulnerable. And that is what I meant by Bernadette needing to wait for Laurents to have this idea. Or are you comparing Bette to another previous Rose?
