My family and I are going to New York in two weeks, and are considering getting tickets to Gypsy, simply because we all adore Bernadette Peters. We're all adults except for my younger sister who is 12.

My question is, I know Mr. Mendes' reputation (I've seen Cabaret) and I am curious as to how risque the new revival is. I've never seen Gypsy (not even the movie, though I should really rent it), but according to a synopsis I read online only a small portion of the show seems to be open to "interesting" staging (Gimmick and The Strip).

Is there any partial/whole nudity in this production? I've seen the Hey, Mr. Producer rendition of Gimmick (Bernadette, Ruthie Henshall and Julia MacKenzie) so I think I know what to expect there, but would appreciate comments on how sexy the show gets.

I don't care in the slightest, but my parents don't want to take my sister if it's anything like Cabaret.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Drew, it is nothing like Cabaret. The story just doesn't work to be staged as provacatively as Cabaret. That being said this is a Mendes version of Gypsy - a story with an element of burlesque in it. Rose does a few things with Herbie that are more risque than the movie (I've never seen a stage show) but nothing worse than mild tv programs. Well I guess I won't be secretive as that makes it sound worse than it is. She is trying to kind of come on to him and let's her hand sort of meander down to his lap area and she puts his hand on her backside at one point.

There are moments when you see topless strippers. Some of it is back lit so you really don't see it too much and it is fast. During one production number with Gypsy, her chorus girls are topless but they have pasties on. They are on stage for a few minutes. I saw lots of kids in the audience. Unless your sister is very immature for a 12 year old, I would think she would be fine. I have seen much more on network television.
