When the bway show Titanic went into previews the initial response was disasterous. The scene changes were SLOW and they had MANY technical problems. Everyone said the show was doomed! Talk shows were reporting the failures of this show way before opening night. SLowly opinion began to change because the show EVOLVED IN PREVIEWS. That is what a PREVIEW is for. The show eventually went on to win the Tony for best musical and it became a must-see in NYC.
It was an idea that people scoffed at and the show ended up rising to the occasion and surpassing everyone's expectations. I remember reading some of the most vicious reports of the demise of this show on Talkin' Broadway and All That Chat. It just goes to show what can happen to a show during the preview phase. Don't lose hope and don't write Gypsy's fate just yet. Let's hold our breath and wait and see what the director, producers, and star have in store for us. They have a month. A great deal can occur in that time.
