Gosh, you learn something new every day. I had absolutely no idea that "BP" was considered disrespectful or that it bothered anyone, but now that I know, I'll cease and desist.

From now on, if you see me write BP, you can assume I'm referring to British Petroleum.

I do understand where you are coming from Jenny that's why I put "I guess" in brackets when suggesting that people say Mary rather than MTM; I'm not even sure that using only her first name would be respectful (considering that this is not a Mary Tyler Moore message board).

I just don't understand how you think referring to Bernadette by her first name is more or just as disrespectful as referring to her by her initials
I'm really not trying to cause an argument, I'm just trying to understand.

I cannot speak for her, but I would think she would rather be referred to as Bernadette (by fans) as opposed to BP.

For someone you are all fans of and who really love her acting and music, take the time to spell out her real name..the one her parents put on her birth certificate and the one she has been called her whole life. Her name is not only beautiful but it's rare and I personally would take the time writing it out.

I completely agree with that post! Her name is rare (although I know about 5 other people with that name) and beautiful. It's actually always been one of my favorite names since I was little (before I had ever even heard of Bernadette Peters).

Now I'm a bit worried! When I first met Bernadette and was talking with her, I refered to her by her first name. Was I being dissrespectful? Should I have addressed her as Ms. Peters?

Of course if you remember the story she told on Regis about the new cement around her new commode in her bathroom. She wrote BP + MW in the cement not Bernadette + Michael.

Well in that case it's different. Most people carve their initials in a tree not their full names.

Hmm. Disagree. I see names as much as initals.
