Bernadette's singing is nasal. She certainly didn't portray a woman with confidence and stamina. She didn't have the tough mother gruffness needed for the part. She didn't portray the experience of a woman who had been around the block a few times and taken a few kicks. By the way, the little girl who played June resembled that poor little innocent Jon Benet who was murdered in Denver. If you were sitting in orchestra you would have heard the gasps when she first appeared on the stage. It was disgraceful! For that matter, so was the show.

I don't think Bernadette's singing is nasal. Barbra Streisand's is nasal (LOL and I'm a fan of hers too!)

I agree that she could have portrayed the character with a little more edge and confidence; it was only the first preview though!

I was in the center orchestra and I didn't hear any gasps when Baby June came on
Besides, that is what June looked like as a child! Maybe it was Jon Benet's parents that were dressing her like the character.

Everyone certainly is entitled to their opinion, but I think it's important to criticize in a constructive manner. Coming to a fan sight and posting entirely negative comments seems rather unconstructive to me.
For goodness sakes, it was only the first preview! Give the woman a break!!!

I have faith in her

Barbra would have done a great job and I'm not a fan of hers. Although I still have to stick with Bette Midler. Rose's part called for a no-nonsense, not too educated type. BP sounded as though she was trying to impress her school teachers (not professors) not an audience. BP should try-out for the Christmas show at Rockefeller Center, she would make a wonderful sheep in the nativity scene!

See, why do you have to add the unneccessary remarks at the end!?
The first half of that post was fine and discussable, but then you had to say the sheep thing!

Bette Midler happens to be my favorite Mama Rose. But I have a feeling Bernadette will shock everyone (in a good way) come opening night.

See, I think referring to someone as their initials( BP) is disfrespectful in itself...just shows you're too lazy to type a name out. Secondly, I was sitting front row ceneter and did not hear ONE gasp or comment from anyone thinking Heather looks like Jon Benet...I didn't even notice the "resemblence" until you mentioned it. She does SORT OF look like her...but obviously not enough where peopel were floored by it. I think the gasps you might have heard were from how impressed people were by her talent. Secondly, what you saw was a PREVIEW not a movie where they can go back and do take after take after take....I'm sure within time everything will fall into place!

Just remember that this idiot who is posting is trying to upset the fans. It is merely a sign of bitterness and immaturity. Let's not feed the fire. No one should review a musical after a PREVIEW performance. That is why it is a PREVIEW. Let's cast our judgements on opening night.

Well, I wouldn't call what they said a review; it's just an opinion. Anyone who would actually review a preview is cruel. It's bad enough that people are doing that on ATC!

It's a shame, but the only good things I'm reading about the show are being posted on this board. Other people on different boards seem to be criticizing a lot.

Hmm. I would call the reviews on ATC mixed, not bad. The current one that was posted today was posted by someone who pretty much hates everything so of course he was going to bash it. Those responding to his post seem to be defending the show for the most part and also the fact that it has had 2 previews.

OK, not to cause an uproar for those that read this board, but here is some of what is being said on ATC:

"There's this woman named Bernadette Peters playing Rose. It's kind of strange why they cast her. She has a little voice that vacillates between squeaky and yelling throughout the whole night. It really feels like she's pushing her songs. You never quite get comfortable hearing her sing. And, even at the end of tonight's show you could hear her getting hoarse. I can't believe she'll make it through 8 perfs a week.

Mendes and Jerry Mitchell haven't given her much direction in the songs. Her arms are flailing around during "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and her "Rose's Turn" goes nowhere. And her acting is limited. She never seems to hit the correct emotion at the correct pitch. Where did they ever get her? Strictly amateur."

"around the time of the ON THE TOWN revival, I really got tired of her mannerisms and came to just hate her voice, both speaking and singing. Since then, I have just tolerated her. Now if Sam Mendes can transform Ms. Peters into a believable Rose, he’s the greatest director who ever lived. But his idea of casting her in the first place makes me question his sanity."

While many fans are coming to Bernadette's defense, the criticism I am reading is actually hurting my stomach! I hate to think that people might read comments like that and then deicide on not seeing the show. I returned my tickets for "Dance of the Vampires" because I kept hearing bad things about it, and it closed!

Yeah, that's Danny for ya.

Returning your DOTV tickets was probably a good move.

I'm sure you all know this, but it bears saying: for a reason I've never understood, Bernadette causes very strong reactions in people. Some really really don't like her AT ALL, no matter what. Others (that would be me!) LOVE her, no matter what. Don't let the nay-sayers hurt you...they don't know what they are missing! (And, for the record, I haven't seen Gypsy yet but I have tickets for several performances.)

Finally, I've seen posters on other chat rooms really try to mess with people's heads-if you ignore them, they go away because they so desperately need attention.

OK, off my soap-box.

Well, I sort of feel better knowing that Danny is an all-around hater. LOL

I agree that most people either love Bernadette or hate her, but how could they hate her!? OK, sorry, be bias again.

I just wish they wouldn't bash the show before it's even been reviewed by the press. It may put ideas in their heads for when they watch it for official reviews.

Good Point, Anonymous. She does seem to get strong reactions one way or another. I think it is interesting to hear these different opinions but I take it all with a grain of salt.
