| posted: 10/3/2012 at 11:08:27 AM ET I read a interview, and, interviewer said BP is 'gay icon'.
English is not native language for me, so, I don't know what does 'gay icon' mean.
Does it mean she is popular to gay people?
You gotta be a original.

From very early on she has been a strong supporter for organizations that have worked for fairness and equality, and for addressing health issues of the gay community. It is kind of a cliche to say that musical theater is hugely popular with gay men, but there is some truth to that, and Bernadette is pretty much the queen of American musical theater without anyone else even coming close to her level of accomplishment and adoration. Bernadette also seems to have a certain philosophy and attitude about life that appeals to the gay community, a sweetness and a toughness and grace that is rare in this world. Really these are qualities that should appeal to anyone.
A gay friend of mine once quipped to me "the difference between you straight male Bernadette fans and the gay ones is that you want to be with Bernadette, and we want to actually be Bernadette!"

I wonder if, also, some of the roles she has played-- especially the more campy ones--have made or added to her "gay icon" status. I'm thinking, of course of "Dames at Sea".
And let's just add in all of the benefits she has done for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, as well as the concerts, including her Carnegie Hall 1996 concert, for organzations such as Gay Men's Haelth Crisis. Etc etc.

She's the epitome of "gay-friendly." I absolutely love her attitude and so does every single other gay person I know. She's spectacular in that regard and every other.
