I don't think any of us know at this point. The movie website (which is fantastic) has not been updated for several weeks. I do hope it gets a theatrical release. It seems to have only been screened at the Atlanta Film Festival in May, getting really excellent feedback. I think getting an independent film distributed is probably a truly difficult and tremendous task which probably just takes time.

"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. The muse is dressed like Oz, sounds like Queens and behaves like a bored student adviser." Alice Film Review, The New York Times, December 25, 1990

"I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987

Theatremania article:
"Coming Up Roses":
"The script just came to me – which is what always seems to happen to me in my career – and I thought it would be such an interesting role since Diane goes on such an emotional roller-coaster," says Peters. "There was a scene where I actually had to hit my daughter, and I didn't know if I could find something within myself to express that anger. That's why I like to do these roles, because I discover new things about myself." "

Theatremania article, Nov 8, 2012

ANd, her future Broadway plans:

"As for when Peters will actually return to the Broadway stage -- that remains in the hands of fate, she says. "I don't think I'll be doing anything in the next year, but it you never know. I have a part in mind, but I'm afraid to say it out loud, because the way my life works it might happen. And right now, I'm enjoying a little time off." "

This is the first review I've seen:

"Though movie stars love to show off their stage skills, theater actors rarely get similar opportunities to spread their wings. Bernadette Peters makes the most of her chance in “Coming Up Roses,” a modest drama most notable for its heartfelt performances.... Peters does a beautiful job with a very difficult character; most actresses would have taken a more theatrical approach to this melodramatic, bipolar parent. Instead, she modulates the highs and lows carefully, which allows us to understand her daughter’s unwavering loyalty."

NY Daily News, 11/08/12

I believe that Bernadette has become quite the film actress, able to be subtle (a word that I do not usually associate with her, given her larger-than-life, over-the-top stage performances [maybe not Sally]) when the character requires. (For the record, I have not seen "Coming Up Roses")

New York Times review:

"Diane, frequently immobilized by bipolar disorder, brings with her several closets’ worth of stage costumes from her glory days. She vacillates between near catatonia and a bubbly, unrealistic optimism, and the movie has several florid but threadbare Broadway fantasy sequences....

“Coming Up Roses” suggests a grotesque hybrid of elements from “Sunset Boulevard,” “Gypsy,” “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “Lolita,” fused with the lowdown neorealism of a film like “Winter’s Bone.” But the grittier side of “Coming Up Roses,” which Ms. Albright wrote with Christina Lazaridi, is unconvincing boilerplate grunge.

Alice is lured into the street life by a neighbor, Cat (Reyna de Courcy), who enlists her as a lookout while she burglarizes a local house. Cat, who also has a demented mother, is saving her pennies to run away to New York City. Yet Alice has no appetite for crime. For no particular reason, except perhaps desperation, the story halfheartedly throws in a lesbian angle by having Cat pine for Alice.

The “Lolita” element is provided by Charles (Peter Friedman), Diane’s recently divorced landlord. Diane — preening, batting her eyes and dressing provocatively — fantasizes that Charles is their salvation, but he lusts after Alice.

Led by Ms. Peters, “Coming Up Roses” has some brave performances. But this first feature from Ms. Albright does not augur a brilliant future."

Review:
"Writer-director Lisa Albright’s second feature film is a slightly grimy fable for kids on the cusp of adulthood that traces an outline of grace around life’s cruel truths.

Bernadette Peters stars in "Coming Up Roses" as Diane, a washed-up performer with a closet full of memories (not to mention hats and gowns), but no real prospects. When Diane’s older daughter, Cherie (Shannon Esper), moves to Nashua, New Hampshire, to marry, Diane packs up a moving van and younger daughter Alice (Rachel Brosnahan) and relocates to be nearby. Is she a mother who can’t let go? Or a grown-up child afraid to release her hold on one of her life’s anchors?...

Peters brings some star wattage to this film, but it’s Brosnahan who carries the show, flirting one moment with the precipice and then fighting the next not to go over the edge. Her performance is a lovely thing to see."

Bernadette appeared on the New York news tv show "New York Live" on Nov 9 (2012) and talked about "Coming Up Roses", Smash, and the after-effects of the storm:

She revealed a spoiler about "Smash"--her character is hired by the producers of Marilyn.

Hello,

Hope it's not annoying that I'm sort of reviving this thread... has anyone gotten to see CUR? I planned a trip to the city as soon as I found out that the movie would premiere there, and ended up seeing it twice. There weren't very many people in the theater the second time around at all, and the reviews haven't been that great, but I thought Bernadette's performance was wonderful. The movie itself was rather weird, I guess it was alright, but Bernadette makes it so worth it. She is always so committed to her characters, and this time was no exception.

For those who have seen it, what did you think of the ending? I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't seen it yet, but I recall reading in an interview where Bernadette said that things turn out well for Diane, but... I wasn't so sure. :/

I wonder if it will ever be released on DVD. I sure hope so.

How do you like them egg rolls, Mr. Goldstone?
