Also, why wasn't Bernadette in " Sondheim on Sondheim" on Broadway?

No doubt she was offered a role and turned it down. Why? Because she is a smart woman. There isn't a very challenging role in the show and the show itself is not very good. The video clips of Sondheim talking are fasinating and its a talented cast but ultimately its the video that drives the show and the entire concept is somewhat unsatisfying.

And actually Bernadette is a part of the show. She is shown a few times in the video footage and is ultimately included among the pictures of his collaborators and friends. I think this is the best way she could be a part of the show.

I agree with moljul. She was brilliant to sit & wait for the Little Night Music opportunity. And maybe, just maybe, she'll follow it up with the great Follies revival we've all been hoping for. I think she's playing her cards right.

And how brilliant that this Menier Chocolate Factory production finally gave her that opportunity.

I can't believe how ungenorous you normally sophisticated theatre folk are about Catherine Zeta-Jones getting the Tony award. She didn't just get the Tony for singing, however well or not, "Send In The Clowns" on that awards show on Sunday, she got it for her entire performance in the run of the show.

Look how it can work in the opposite way ... Bernadette gave a great "Rose's Turn" on the Tony award show but still failed to get the award for her entire performance in the run of that show. Be fair.

Scottie,

I agree judging Catherine's performance in the stage play based on her performance at the Tonys is not fair. And if you go back, you'll see I have made no negative comments about her up until now. I saw her in the show in March and while she did not blow me away, she was quite lovely. The thrill for me and reason I went was for Angela but Catherine did a nice job. Now, IMO, her performance on the Tonys was awful. She was bad that morning at rehearsal, I was hoping she was just nervous and she might loosen up a bit with rehearsal but she did not. Many are reporting they have witnessed similar issues with her performance at the theater. But similar numbers are reporting they witnessed a performance close to what I saw in the theater. So it sounds like she has either altered her performance recently or changes night to night and I was able to see one of her better performances. I hope the odd gesture filled performance is not the norm. Whether she was the best of the season, I can't comment on as I didn't see all the other performers. But yes, the award is supposedly given based on her performances in the theater and not on the telecast. Catherine seemed to get at least decent reviews when the show opened and its a shame that either the performance has suffered or that she ends up being remembered for one bad television appearance which seems to not be, at least, a consistent representation of her theater performance. Hopefully she is feeling better, the Production Stage Manager is doing his or her job and getting her performance back to where it should be and she'll have a good last week in the show.

At any rate, I'm fully expecting to be blown away by Bernadette in the role. How's that for pressure??

Thanks, moljul, just saw your interesting response to my post. I used to check this forum daily but don't anymore. It seems to have lost it's way somehow. Maybe now Bernadette is back in the theatre it might liven up again with some of it's past interesting and informed chat, here's hoping!

My friend just got back home to London from a business trip to NY and managed to attend the last matinee of ALNM. Not particularly a Catherine Zeta-Jones fan, like you he really went for Angela Lansbury, but he was absolutely blown away by Zeta-Jones' performance. Funny, moving, camp, but not over-the-top apparently, everything the character should be. He said her "Send In The Clowns" literally stopped the show and the next scene couldn't continue for some time because of her prolonged ovation from the audience. It seems the paying theatre-goers are more receptive and a tad better informed than the people who just sit back on their sofa, on their own, watching televised award shows.

Now he's trying to persuade me to go see Bernadette in the role, (he's a big Stritch fan as well). I think I'll wait to see what BP's reviews are like before I even begin to think of spending that amount of money. As much as I love Bernadette, I'm just not a Sondheim worshipper I'm afraid.
