Did Peters, whose character is a Broadway baby transplanted to Ireland, have any qualms about playing a lesbian, even in a family-friendly movie? "I was more nervous about playing Jewish," she notes, adding her trademark giggle. "And having to be an actress who read Chekhov."---this just cracks me up

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 3/13/2008 at 9:39:27 AM ET Peters, who is 60, has mostly been doing concerts of late. She played Momma Rose (“the Hamlet of Broadway for women”)
I find that so interesting - for a couple of reasons. A few years back they would have said "Saint Joan", despite the fact that Sarah Bernhardt had portrayed Hamlet on stage in the 1800's. But now that great modern female actors like Frances de le Tour and Fiona Shaw have claimed Hamlet for the girls ...
But "Rose" isn't "Hamlet". How could there possibly be any comparison? She's King Lear ... "I am a (wo)man more sinn'd against than sinning". And surely "Rose's Turn" is King Lear's great "Heath" scene.
"Rumble thy bellyful! Spit, fire! spout, rain!
Nor rain, wind, thunder, fire, are my daughters:
I tax not you, you elements, with unkindness;
I never gave you kingdom, call'd you children,
You owe me no subscription: then let fall
Your horrible pleasure: here I stand, your slave,
A poor, infirm, weak, and despised old man:
But yet I call you servile ministers,
That have with two pernicious daughters join'd
Your high engender'd battles 'gainst a head
So old and white as this. O! O! 'tis foul! "

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 3/13/2008 at 10:52:12 AM ET The reporter probably thinks the mass audience still has some dim remembrance in the back of its brain that Hamlet is a big, long, famous, important role. He most likely doesn't have the same confidence that it would recognize anymore who or what King Lear was or signified.

Or maybe he just doesn't know what he's talking about.
