Maybe I'm a little overly sensitive but it seems Bernadette's take on Rose gets trashed more than praised by many of the big theater chat boards. But I thought I would bring this thread to everyone's attention. Of course everyone will have a different opinion and there is nothing wrong with liking someone over Bernadette (even on this board) but I was pleased to see Bernadette getting some very nice comments on her unique and refreshing take on Rose.

"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. The muse is dressed like Oz, sounds like Queens and behaves like a bored student adviser." Alice Film Review, The New York Times, December 25, 1990

"I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987

I just don't get how anyone could think that Bernadette's Rose was anything less than perfect. Same goes for Tammy as Louise.

I have a friend who's promised to go next week when in NY and can't wait to hear the report as she's seen the last three Broadway Roses. I've been reading some of the posts and am curious about the cuts that people are mentioning. Can you imagine if during the preview period of the Mendes production people had reported that there was no Kringilein at all, a reprise was cut and, get the tar and feathers now, parts of Rose's Turn had been removed, the kind of venom that would have been tossed around. As it was people were making up all kinds of rubbish -- the overture was going to be cut, the press wasn't going to be invited. I'm sure some nitwit would have posted something absurd like "obviously Peters can't make it through the entire song so they had to cut things for her or she just wasn't capable of deliverying those lines."
