C'mon you lucky Stateside Bernadette watchers ... spill the beans.

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 5/9/2007 at 8:23:41 AM ET Thanks Jenn, I just watched that preview video and was disappointed to see that it really only looks like a twist on the Ally McBeal "older woman" scenario with two lawyers scrapping over who is going to "have" her ... I do hope her role was a tad meatier than that!

| posted: 5/9/2007 at 10:55:42 AM ET Well I'll chime in. It was HYSTERICAL!!!! I don't watch Boston Legal regularly. In fact I've only seen it a handful of times but its always so quirky and slick and funny. Bernadette's character was very strong and went head to head with James Spader's character on legal issues as well as whether he would drop trou in her chambers. It was a fairly even match up but I believe she won in a way. While he didn't drop his pants, after talking to her he did have to leave with a pillow over his lap.
Then William Shatner's character became convinced she actually wanted him (though he had no real proof) and proceeded to flirt with her during the trial. The looks between them were hysterical as she couldn't figure out what the hell he was doing. His visit to her chambers after the trial to congratulate her on her ruling ("Very ballsy") was even funnier as she wouldn't have anything to do with him.
There was much more to the episode including a very dramatic plot about the torture at Guantanamo Bay. And Bernadette had some very good dramatic moments, including when she handed down her ruling. Would love it if she became a semi-regular judge.
I can write more detail about the episode if you want. Don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it but will be soon. But it will have to be later.
"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. The muse is dressed like Oz, sounds like Queens and behaves like a bored student adviser." Alice Film Review, The New York Times, December 25, 1990
"I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 5/9/2007 at 11:02:26 AM ET It wasn't really a question of who's going to "have" her. She played a pervy judge who likes to play games with the male lawyers for fun. She's completely in charge.
But the show does have exactly the same sense of humor and overall style as Ally McBeal. If you liked one, you'll probably like the other (or you'll be like me and hate them both).
Bernadette was pretty funny though.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 5/9/2007 at 8:07:43 PM ET Moljul, I guess the main difference was that I felt Bernadette's judge knew exactly what was going through William Shatner's mind. She would know (and like) that the lawyers talk together about her behind-the-scenes behavior. I'm sure she counted on Shatner wanting to get in on a little of that sexual "harrassment" fun himself and she was toying with him by withholding it.
Even though I disliked the show, her character was quite a comic accomplishment. It's remarkable how much hilariously exaggerated comedic kinkiness she was able to suggest with just a few sly expressions and some deadpan comments.

| posted: 5/9/2007 at 9:04:58 PM ET Karen, I guess what I meant (but obviously did not say) is at first, she was trying to figure out what he was doing as he was just waving at her in a really obnoxious way. But obviously she only likes the dropping trou thing when it is her idea because its her control issue. The rest of the time he was making little faces at her she seemed to be thinking, "you've gotta be kidding me". She was obviously not turned on or attracted to him at all which is why she threw him out of her chambers even though he dropped his pants.
I'll try to work on a spoiler synopsis.
EDIT: I just read Rose's remarks. I NEVER got the idea she was in the least bit interested. She seemed quite repulsed by him. Though I find it interesting that we saw different things.

| posted: 5/9/2007 at 9:23:55 PM ET Sorry I wasn't clear. I didn't mean she was interested I meant that she was teasing him a bit by pretending to be as a control thing. I only saw it in one look but I was distracted when I was watching it.
