I just saw Bernadette in concert in galveston. She sang one song that I had never heard before but absolutely loved. She sang it with just the piano and cello. It was about saying goodbye and I thought that Missouri was a word in hit and tried to search for it but can't find it. Help anyone??
Sounds like they may have tinkered with the arrangement a bit if it has cello. Maybe the Galveston Symphony has a star cellist on board and saw a good spot to feature that soloist? Or maybe Marvin has written a new chart for that song? I'll report back after I see Bernadette this Saturday!
I was at the concert in Galveston Saturday night, and it was great. I walked out of there wishing I could see the concert Sunday; she was in great voice and put on a fabulous show. This may sound awful, but one of the best parts of seeing her in Galveston versus Houston is that you don't have to listen to the symphony for an act. Don't get me wrong - I enjoy the symphony, but if I am paying for a Bernadette Peters concert, I don't want to hear the symphony. So the concert was 90 minutes, no intermission.
There was a bit of techical difficulty on "There's nothing like a Dame" - a few measures in they screwed up and dimmed the orchestra lights so they couldn't read their music so she had to start the song over. During "Fever", a kamikaze moth almost became a snack but flew back up to the lights after coming within 2 inches of her face (amazing what you can see from the front row!). I know I am missing a few songs, and I don't know that I have them in order other than the first couple and the last few, but she sang:
Let me entertain you
No one is alone
Unexpected song
Some enchanted evening
There's nothing like a dame
Mister Snow
Fever
Time Heals Everything
Not a day goes by
Shenendoah
You could drive a person crazy
With so little to be sure of
Children will listen
Move on
Being Alive
Rose's Turn
Count your blessings
Shenendoah was the only song new to me and I loved it - especially how between each verse she didn't look up/out at the audience but instead looked down - the emotion was palpable. It really showcased her vocal talents and it was a truly haunting performance. The entire evening the audience was very receptive and everyone really seemed to enjoy it. She wore the sparkly silver dress for the concert and at the stage door she was wearing a lovely green dress and wrap (it was soooo windy).
I have a couple of pics that I will try to link to if I can figure it out...
Thanks for the pictures. She looks lovely and you look very excited and happy.
Great green dress and wrap!
"Particular mention must be made of Bernadette Peters, who turns up briefly in a sort of sparkly Glinda the Good costume. She's the reluctant muse sent to help Alice with her writing. The muse is dressed like Oz, sounds like Queens and behaves like a bored student adviser." Alice Film Review, The New York Times, December 25, 1990
"I'm one star away from Dolly Parton ... and Raymond Massey is between us. I hope we don't suffocate him." Bernadette Peters receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, April 24, 1987
THanks for all the postings! I loved the pictures. We were at the same exact show and I also remember seeing you. I was in the first row also with my husband all the way to the side! I wish there was a recording of her singing Shenandoah. I will never forget that version. It may have been just with a piano.. I can't remember. Everything was so great. Thanks for the playlist.. my husband and I were trying to tell my mom all about it and couldnt remember every song.
