She usually doesn't wear them in public. I know if she is presenting at an awards show or something she usually memorizes her "patter" instead of wearing her glasses to read the teleprompter. The same is true when she is cohosting on Regis. She sometimes messes something up that she is reading off of the teleprompter because she can't see it clearly. I believe she has worn glasses since she was a teenager because I've seen a picture of her when she was in her early twenties wearing glasses. Though with her age she probably does use reading glasses too. Hey it happens to almost everyone over 40. LOL But I don't think that is what you have seen her wear in public.

I have seen her wear glasses several times before.Almost everytime I am at REGIS when Bernadette is there she has problems reading the cue cards they have. So, its quite obvious she has some vision problems. I don't know if many of you have realized this but I've noticed when Bernadette is reading a paper in her hand she'll hold it away from her and squint and then pull it close to her again

The closer the cue cards are the better she can read them because she is near-sighted. "Reading glasses" would be needed for the paper/newpaper article thing or reading a book - reading things at close range. Completely different vision problems. When you said she needs them for reading I thought you meant true reading glasses or far-sightedness. So she probably does need both. I know she wears glasses for seeing distances. I've seen her wear them in theaters to see the stage or I even saw her on the stage at a forum of sorts using them to actually see the audience. Once on Regis she used them when she did that target shooting archery thing during Olympic week. She wore her glasses (though she had clip on sunglasses when she was on camera because they were outside). A couple of years ago at Broadway Barks, Bernadette was trying to read a cue card (that she was holding in her hand) and she was moving it in and out a lot and MTM gave her a hard time about needing glasses which gave me the idea that she hadn't gotten reading glasses yet or maybe she just didn't want to wear them which is why MTM was giving her a hard time. :-)

Not that poor vision is funny (I've worn glasses since I was 5 years old), but it's funny to picture Bernadette and Mary arguing over the issue...I was probably at that Broadway Barks and don't remember that part.

Myopia which is also known as nearsightedsness makes a persons distance vision blurry and out of focus, ergo close objects can be seen more clearly than object that are farther away. Nearsighted people may need to squint or frown to see things at a distance. hyperopia aka farsightedness makes a person near vision blurry ergo reading and doing close work may be difficult. therefore by what was said about her vision is that she has hyperopia which is the same condition that my optimologist diagnosed me with.

Why is everyone so hung up on Bernadette's vision. Jeeze....why doesn't someone just ask her (flat out) what she needs glasses for the next time they see her, rather than specualte and assume?

Anyways, I want to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas!!!!

| posted: 12/24/2002 at 11:38:07 AM ET Actually she told a friend of mine that she is very nearsighted - can't see things at a distance, can't read cue cards, etc. unless they are very close. Daedreams, did I say something different? Not trying to be argumentive. Just honestly wondering. I've never been able to keep the Myopia/Hyperopia thing straight but I thought I had the nearsighted/farsighted thing straight. LOL Mostly because I have been near-sighted most of my life. But I have also noticed her doing the "trombone" thing on Regis when she is reading articles but she does still seem to be able to read them so maybe she doesn't desperately need the reading glasses yet. LOL
And hey if you can't spend hours analyzing Bernadette's vision on her fan site than what good is the site. Kidding. Just kidding. Totally agree it is a rather bizarre discussion.

From: London | posted: 12/24/2002 at 1:29:07 PM ET oh god, what have I started?! It was just an innocent question. Well, while we're on the subject anyway, Ii'm getting increasingly short-sighted (weird that you lot say near-sighted and the brits say this) as I get older. Its probably because i wear my glasses a lot -if I take them off I'll probably put them down somewhere and forget about them. I'm nearly fifteen and I've been wearing glasses since I was 6 - you do the maths.
