After receiving Jeff's fabulous DVDs with all of those amazing performances, I was curious to ask which song performances you admire most that were caught on video. Whether in a film, a video of a musical like Sunday or Into the Woods, a television performance, whatever. Which ones always leave you spellbound?

What is nice about those DVDs is that they go back over a couple of decades so we can see (hear)the progression of that amazing voice. It also gives us a real sense of how she has developed as an artist.
Two of my particular faves happen to be performances from the Rosie O'Donnell Show (a show that has never been aired over here). Being Alive is pretty amazing and I love hearing it with just a piano accompaniment. I think Bernadette gives much more of herself in this performance than in others.
Then there is There Is Nothing Like A Dame, again from the Rosie show. I adore this performance - and it always makes me laugh because she performs this song with such delightful raw gusto - she also does cute little dance movements throughout the performance.
But my number one favourite in these DVD's really has to be Rose's Turn at the Tony Awards.
The anger/sadness/regret and downright defiance in her voice and performance is simply astounding.
And to think no Tony Award came her way ... as they say in the football pages of British tabloids --- she "woz robbed"!
as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

And you definitely don't have to just choose from Jeff's DVDs, they just inspired me to ask the question.
From what I've seen so far, I have to agree with Scottie and vote for "Rose's Turn" at the Tony's as my personal favorite. I guess it's sort of the obvious choice but I just get goosebumps everytime I see it (which has been far too many times ). It's just one of those special moments that few performers seem to have in a career and thankfully it was captured on television. And the audience reception to her is just so warm and loving...especially when they start cheering even before she has finished. And I love seeing (briefly) John Lithgow whooping it up afterward...history making stuff.
Another one I love is "Pearl's a Singer" from her Canadian concert. I simply adore this song and I love how Bernadette's deeply felt performance creates such sympathy for the forgotten "Pearl."
Keep 'em coming folks!

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 1/6/2007 at 7:40:20 AM ET Just thinking .... Bernadette may not have won a Tony for GYPSY but if the show had come to London as planned she would certainly have a Larry by now.
Yes, the beautiful cello in Being Alive makes that performance even more special.
Jean, I love the London RFH DVD too. I just wish they would re-issue it complete with all the missing songs - and the overture. So many favourites there --- in particular Johanna which BP sings with such superb control. Has anyone ever heard Megan Mullaly's version of this song?
Hey Mr Producer ... It's fun to see Maria Friedman and Dame Judi in the background just so blown away by BP's performance of Being Alive. It's such a shame though that the thunderous audience reaction to that song is edited. You've Gotta Have A Gimmick always makes me laugh - and I laugh even more wondering what the occupants of the Royal Box made of it .
as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

Another song performance I have to mention is "Not a Day Goes By" from the London DVD. The first time I saw it I was startled by her complete vulnerability and emotion while singing this song...peerless.
