I've told all the UK Bernadette fans that I know about this (all three of them!) but thought I would post it as a TV alert in case any more BP- minded Britons are around here. I would hate anyone to miss it.

"Holiday in Your Heart" starring LeAnn Rimes and Bernadette Peters will be shown on Channel Five this coming Saturday, 17th June at 17.35 hours BST.

I have never seen this film and am looking forward to it - does anyone have any opinion on whether it is good or not and about Bernadette's performance? I hope she has a substantial role - it will be a lovely treat to see her in something "new".

Here is what the new edition of the BBC's magazine Radio Times has to say about Bernadette's contribution to the film ....
"Bernadette Peters lends solid support as a singer on the skids, but her performance only serves to expose Rimes' acting shortcomings."

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

Scottie, I'll be very curious to hear what you think about that one. I don't want to say too much now and give things away before you've had a chance to see it yourself.

My impression is that there are a lot of conflicting opinions. I seem to remember a lot of people here liking it very much or at least parts of it. Me, I'm not so crazy about it. Maybe you need to like country music.

Bernadette's role is definitely very substantial.

This is what I posted about Holiday in Your Heart many moons ago:

"I love this movie. I love that Bernadette gets to sing Country. I love that she gets to do the accent right (she wandered a little in AGYG, to my ears). I love that she puts so much charisma, charm, Heart and honesty in what could have been a throw-away.
Acting students, take note.
And, I've probably watched this movie 5 or 6 times, and it's especially warm-and-fuzzy at this time of year. "

If you do a search for "Holiday in Your Heart" in the little box on the upper right of your screen, you can read what we've said about this movie over the years.

(Is there nothing having to do with Bernadette we haven't talked about?)

My opinion: It's not a very well written movie and Lee Ann Rhimes was a very novice actress. However, she seemed to be working very hard and did a good job with her limited experience. I'm not sure the script could have been much better considering the source. Bernadette rises well above the material and I think pulls Lee Ann up a notch or two with her. It's a fun movie to watch particularly as a fan of Bernadette's but its certainly not one of my favorites of hers mostly due to the lack of quality writing.

I'm afraid I have an extremely low tolerance threshold for country music but can always grin and bear it I suppose. I love folk music though but that is so totally different. Glad to know that BP's contribution is substantial - wouldn't even mind if she she sang with a country twang. Hopefully, she does sing and it's not just LeAnne Rimes - never heard of her until this week.

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

But I live in America and I don't think I'd heard of her either before this movie came along.

Well, Karen, to be fair when the movie came out, Lee Ann Rhimes had only had one big hit, Blue, though it was a pretty big hit.

Scottie, Lee Ann Rhimes was a teenage country and pop sensation because she possessed a rather mature, bluesy voice at the age of 13-14. Think Patsy Cline. Her career in Country Music has continued and she has transitioned into the adult world well though she isn't the teen sensation she once was. Now she is just a well respected, decently successful adult recording artist.

If you watch the movie not expecting too much I think you'll enjoy yourself. Bernadette talks with a major country twang and her hair, well words simply can't describe it.

Well, as far as not knowing LeAnne is concerned I suppose my musical tastes just naturally lie elsewhere and it is therefore so easy not to know people - regardless of talent and chart success etc.

Can't wait to see the "hair" - the mind positivly boggles! Oh, now I have visions of Dolly Parton wigs. Bernadette? Please God, no!

Well if you want, I'm sure I could find a picture on the internet but I wouldn't want to spoil it if you care about those types of things. Just realize Bernadette is playing a country western star who hit her height in the 70s!

    quote:

Pop country is totally different from folk. Bluegrass and "alternative" country (I don't like the label, but that's what's stuck-there's also "Newgrass" which is what some call modern bluegrass, and I hate that term as well) are quite similar to folk music, especially the storytelling/epic story songs. Similar instruments are also used. Appalachian/mountain music evolved from the English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish settlers of the Appalachian mountain range. Old timey country and bluegrass evolved from that (around the 1940s for bluegrass-I think earlier for traditional country, probably around the time of the invention of the radio or records).

And pop country is very different from bluegrass and alternative country. I suspect pop country is what's mostly heard in the UK (it's what's mostly heard on major US country stations).

And then there's tejano and norteno music from Mexico and Texas, which definitely have country and folk influences.

Jenn, proud bluegrass and alternative country fan (and apologizing for the length-I do tend to carry on!)

Speaking of wacky wigs, Bernadette used to wear a massive one once in a while in her concerts when she was parodying country-western types. There was even a mention of it in People Magazine back in the seventies (10/10/77) with an accompanying photo (it looks about 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide). Here's what it said:

Peters Wigs Out

Not that Bernadette Peters, 29, doesn't have her own glorious mop of golden ringlets--it's just that for her new nightclub act, the former star of All's Fair does a put-on of flamboyant C & W singers. To emphasize the point, Hollywood costume designer Bob Mackie (who decorates Cher and Carol Burnett) piled up a Dolly Parton-esque wig for Peters. At 10 pounds, the haystack's so heavy Peters appears onstage with two dudes who thoughtfully hold it up for her.

So Holiday in Your Heart wasn't anything new for her. I think Bernadette likes country music anyway. Another country connection is that, according to the book The Nashville Chronicles: the Making of Robert Altman's Masterpiece by Jan Stuart, she was originally offered the very memorable role that Barbara Harris eventually played. He doesn't say why she turned it down, but since Nashville was filmed in the summer of 1974 it would have been to do Mack & Mabel. There's no source provided in the book's notes for that claim, so I'm not sure if it's true or just a rumor (Bette Midler is also mentioned as having been unsuccessfully approached).

LOL Just thinking about that wig and those outfits.

I like Country music, but that didn't start until recently. When I first saw this film I was not a fan of Country music at all, and I still liked it because of Bernadette. I think you'll enjoy it Scottie. The story is just sort of sweet, and both ladies are vocally talanted regardless of the genre.

The thought of Bernadette in an Altman film is positively mouth-watering - it would have been great had it happened. He is one of my favourite film makers. As far as country music is concerned I think she sang a Dolly Parton song on The Muppets Show way back when and that sounded great.

Bernadette's live version of Faithless Love always sounds pretty folk -ey to my ears with those fabulous high Joan Baez-ish notes. I read in an interview that Bernadette likes some country music and even plays Scots babgpipe music - on her CD player I hasten to add. Though the mental image of her smothered in tartan and blowing into a set of pipes with her red Hebridean curls falling around her face is quite an amusing one.

Can't wait to see the film, it sounds a hoot. Thanks for all the background - I'm sure I'm going to love it.

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

This movie is worth it just to hear Bernadette sing "Crazy" - ah, it's beautiful. And Bernadette is CHARMING in the movie - she really captures the old-style country diva. LeAnn Rhimes is very sweet in the movie. I'm from Texas, as is she, and she was already on the news there before making it nationally. Texans are very fond of their "country" music - and I remember many comparing her to Patsy Cline and other classic country singers. She still has a classic style and is quite successful.

She's mentioned Lyle Lovett as one of her favorite singers/musicians.

Sure, there are country songs that have awfully trite lyrics, but there are many, to quote Julia Roberts in another context, insanely talented musicians in pop country, alt country, and bluegrass. Gifted songwriters and musicians who tell stories and weave images with their music (and also write some wickedly funny music), and that's probably what attracts her, and others, to country. I don't know if she just happened to pick up on Lovett or if there are other favorites.

And yes, she is charming. That's an excellent way to put it.

Jenn
