Although I have been a frequent reader, I have never posted before b/c I never really had anything worth adding. I just have to share that I just got back into town after a delayed flight due to mechanical problems from her Buffalo concert (my first) and it was absolutely wonderful. Bernadette looked fabulous and her voice was impeccable. (She did the whistle bit and also came into the audience and asked a bunch of people who the first celebrity they remember meeting was.) I waited out by the stage door in the 40 degree weather and got her autograph on my B.P.loves R.& H. CD and my picture taken with her. She was sooooo nice. (It was cold, but she signed, talked with, and took pictures with everyone who waited for her.) It was an incredible experience. I can't wait 'til Gyspy. She mentioned that this was her last concert before she starts that. Anyone else there?

I was there too. She sounded amazing. That theatre had a great sound system.

I don't really like when she starts pretending like she can't whistle, and then does. It ruins the song....it was funny the first time (at Radio City), but she should really just sing the song and not stop in the middle to be funny. I love when she sings that song though; I wish she would have recorded it.

LOL I forgot that there would be people waiting at the door outside! I was backstage, so when I walked out the door behind Bernadette, I completely forgot there would be people there! I got scared for a second. I can't imagine seeing that everytime I walk out a stage door...but I'm sure she's use to it.

I live in Buffalo and work for the Buffalo Philharmonic. I came here to see what you all thought about the show. I am glad that you enjoyed it. Sorry Buffalo was so cold!

FYI, Klienhans Music Hall in Buffalo is one of the top 5 acousticlly perfect places in the world. Artists love this hall. Remarkablely many of the bigger acts bring thier own sound people who are unaccustomed to working in anything but a concrete convention center and end up messing it up. Glad Bernadette trusted our guys.

To the person that works at the Buffalo venue, if you are still around, I some technical questions.

What I am wondering about is the orchestra backup at Bernadette's concerts. She obviously brings Marvin out and Cubby, but the rest seem to be made up of a local 'contract' orchestra. If that's the case, I presume that Marvin or someone sends the score out ahead of time. The question is how much time do these guys get to prepare? Do they practice without BP? Do they actually run through the entire show prior to the performance?

Since I am sure these orchestra's are fairly expensive to hire, I imagine that they can't afford to spend a lot of time rehearsing.

I just would like to know how it all comes together. Every concert I have seen has been very good considering they don't work together all the time. These musicians must be VERY good.

Jim.

I can't speak to all of Ms. Peter's concerts but I can give you an idea about what happens here with the orchestra.

First let me explain that this wasn't an independent Bernadette Peters concert (where the hall was rented out to her management). This was a Buffalo Philharmonic Concert with Guest Artist Bernadette Peters (this is not a slam but it helps explain). Meaning that the BPO produces around 50 concerts for our regular season. 15 classics, 11 pops,7 new attitudes, 6 childrens, and various specials. Most have guest artists like Ms. Peters, Itzak Perlman, Burt Bacharach, Johnny Mathis, Aretha Franklin etc. Some concerts are just the orchestra. The Orchesta has 80 musicians, mostly fulltime. They perform nearly every week together. The orchestra is made up of many world class musicians and some up and coming ones. Some are teachers at Julliard etc. and some have thier own touring schedule (mostly classical). Many have been playing together for 15 years or more.

The rehearsal schedule generally runs 1 rehearsal (on thursday for a weekend show)with an assistant conductor for the Pops (classical is different), and one on friday with the guest artist. The musicians are very accompished and have been playing together for sometime. The 2nd rehearsal is really the important one, to make sure that artist and orchestra are in sync. On occasion we have sold tickets to the 2nd rehearsal as a fund raiser, like for Yo Yo Ma where the concert was a sell-out.

Some artists bring additional musicians and some even bring thier own conductor.

I hope this answers your questions. I'll check again to see if I can be of further assitance.

Consider supporting your own local orchestra. Donations are greatly needed in most places. Too many orchestras are gone or in trouble these days. Most people don't realize what a symphony orchestra brings to a community. It makes life better for all of us.

Sorry about the pitch, but is is important.

Marie

Thanks Marie. That was very informative. Your orchestra has a very full schedule, and the musicians are obviously very talented to keep up with all the new material.

When you compare that with a group that tours together, like Paul McCartney who was just here, and plays the same material night after night, I would say your musicians have the more difficult task.

Point well taken about supporting the symphony. Here in Phoenix it has been a struggle for years. I recently read they were having to cut back again, and many musicians were leaving because of the poor pay.

OK you sold me, I'll put them on my Christmas donation list

Jim.

Jim,

Good job! There are all kinds of stats (most that I can't remember! lol) about how a cities with orchestras have less teen crime etc etc.

So many people think of symphony orchestras as being for the hoity-toity. That is as old fashioned as thinking that only the rich can afford a computer.

An orchestra makes your town a better place for everybody. Besides, if you don't have an orchestra who would back up Bernadette Peters with the richness that she deserves!

Marie
