I was catching up on my theater news and I came across this story regarding Stephen Sondheim's musical "Bounce". The article rumored that Bernadette may take part in the week long NY reading. The news of Bernadette and Sondheim excites me beyond belief! Although it;s only a reading it still gives hope that this Sondheim musical will reach the great white way! Link to Story
"The Public could not confirm the personnel involved, but sources close to the venture have Eric Schaeffer (Putting It Together) directing, and Richard Kind and Bernadette Peters in the cast. Kind was part of the 2003 company and was generally praised for his portrayal of Addison Mizner, one of the scheming, early 20th century Mizner brother. (He was nominated for a 2003 Joseph Jefferson Award.) Howard McGillin played the other sibling, Wilson, in the regional productions."

Mr. Sondheim is just not giving up on "Bounce". I think with Bernadette involved, it might actually get somewhere!

Because I'm a Sondheimette I want ALNM - I could die happy if she were Desiree and Angie was her mother Madame Armfeldt - but I would love for her to have role in a brand new musical.
(Maureen Moore should reprise her role as Charlotte which she did with the NYC Opera - she was fabulous)

Do you like Bounce? They might be doing some serious rewrites (in terms of the book, at least), and there's a new director. This could be very exciting. In terms of scores, I do prefer ALNM to Bounce, but a new reworking of Bounce is thrilling news to me. It's possible that this could be the last time they work together with a (semi) new show, so there's sentimental issues involved.
I'm all for Bounce, then ALNM. Not so sure about First Wives Club. I enjoyed the movie, but am a bit weary of the film-to-musical thing.
Of course, I'm talking about things way down the road, if they even come to pass.

I really have to reserve judgment on "Bounce". I have only heard bits and pieces and wasn't that excited about it, but sometimes a second listen enhances. I heard Greg Edelman and Michelle Pawk perform a number from it at Wall to Wall - I really like Greg and I find that she has a very interesting voice although that evening she had pitch problems so that may have enfluenced my wincing.

This is very exciting news, I think.
Interesting that she is reading the part of the mother. In earlier productions the role was played by Jane Powell who's about twenty years older (and seems more like thirty years older).
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well and this ends up as a full-scale production. Revivals are fine, but a "new" Sondheim show with Bernadette involved would be a dream come true.

Is this the same part that Michelle Pawk played? If so, that would make Bernadette's casting seem a little more realistic.
The Riedel article was peppered with inaccuracies including her singing Being Alive in her concerts. That song was immediately dropped after Michael died and has never made it back in.
Does anyone have access to a print version of The Post to see if a picture accompanied the article. (I'm assuming its in today's paper). I'd check myself but its so miserable outside.

Okay, I've answered my own question. Michele Pawk played the love interest not the mother. I guess Bernadette can get away with playing the mother since its just a reading but she does seem unlikely for the role if the reading moves forward into a full-fledged production. I mean she is 8 years old than Richard Kind who is playing her son.

Well either mistaken or like I said, its a reading so age appropriateness doesn't matter as much. Unless Bernadette is going for a true character role and will be made up accordingly. Though I don't get the sense that the mother's role is very big so I can't see her taking this on in a full fledged production. There are often huge cast changes between a reading and a production. Maybe she is just doing this because she wanted to work with Sondheim and as the article said, this is a safe way for her to get back into stage work. Not a huge commitment, somewhat protected, etc.
And thank you for responding, Karen. It was starting to look like I was having a conversation with myself.

It’s so hard to trust what that man writes. As Moljul said, the article is “peppered with inaccuracies.” His assessments are off, (did Peters really make “her name appearing in Sondheim shows?”) and he can’t even get basic facts right – ITW opened in 1987. However, if they have gone back to an earlier version, who knows what the Mother’s role was or is now like, assuming she’s actually playing the Mother. There was no Nellie in the Mendes directed workshop production. Hal Prince seems to have been the one who wanted some “girls. I think he even said that he actually got to say that old line, “where are the girls” after seeing the workshop. And if it is more like vaudeville sketches, it might not matter what age people really are. Or it's what you are all saying. It's just a reading, no expectations or commitments, just two friends helping each other out.
