The concert was fantastic. I thought she sounded better than any of other times I've heard her live. She made a mention of Michael's death right after Let Me Entertain You. It was very brief but said she was continuing with her concert schedule 1) out of respect for the ticket buyers and 2) because she made a committment to Michael and he would have wanted her to continue on. I was very close to the stage and while I didn't notice her voice cracking, her eyes welled up during quite a few of the songs.
She was not at all disconnected from the audience this time. While at times it looked like she might be singing directly to/for Michael, she still very much maintained eye contact with the audience. She even laughed a little bit when speaking of how long she's known Marvin and when we all laughed at the title of Marvin's new show "Jewsical the Musical." After the laugh, she said something along the lines of "I'm really going to have to see this one!"
She did not sing Being Alive but added My Funny Valentine.
It was a fantastic performance and I've never seen her sing with more emotion and feeling. She is an amazing performer. I am hoping that these concerts might be at least a little therapeutic for her.
Oh, and it was great fun to hang out with the "group" beforehand at dinner! Lets see if I can remember everyone: Karen1, Karen2, Kevin and his mom, Christine, Ashley, Noah, Vicki and Sarah.
Ok, now for someone else to post all the things I've forgotten.

I very nearly went to this concert. Had I not been traveling so much already this month I probably would have done it. I anguished over the decision every day after seeing the incredible Norfolk concert. Thanks to our friends here I get to experience it vicariously at least!
Did anyone see Bernadette after the show?

Registered: 8/14/2003 | posted: 10/23/2005 at 1:43:20 PM ET She apparently left immediately after the curtain call (or so we were told.) A big group of us hung around and chatted a bit afterwards but I never saw anyone come out except for a few of the musicians. The "stage door" was inside which was nice because it was pouring outside and they also had a dessert reception in the same area for everyone who attended.

From: NYC | posted: 10/23/2005 at 2:07:39 PM ET Indeed it was a wise decision to follow The Star to Bethlehem! PA Fan, Karen 1 and I tried to post last night from our barstools, but it didn't work via blackberry. Anyway, I concur with everything Mandy said. We had a riotous good time. It was wonderful seeing the group at dinner. The Zoellner Center was very nice. Their theme for the evening was "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and they gave a long stemmed rose to everybody who came in. There were indeed some folks there who were quite dressed up - lots of tuxedos and long gowns. There was a huge Bernadette poster inside the lobby - we all plotted on a way to "borrow" it, but nobody was willing to scale the wall for it. There was an event photographer taking pictures of people so I asked him to take a group picture of us. I told him that we were fans from all over the United States who had traveled to Bethlehem to see Bernadette. He seemed impressed and promised to email the picture to PAFan. He also took a picture of us with my camera. Afterward, we discovered that Ashley wasn't even with us! At that point, it was finally time to go in. I think we were all nervous for Bernadette. There was a very short presentation about the fundraising and then it was down to business. Marvin came out and received applause. He just is so elegant and I love to see his energy in directing. He seems to adore Bernadette. Cubby wasn't there, so the lawyer/drummer filled in. Finally we heard those special words introducing Miss Bernadette Peters. She looked beautiful. I think she did lose a little weight - her dress was a little loose, but she looked good - not ill or tired. I really believe that Bernadette shined more brightly than she ever has. This was my fourth Bernadette concert and I have to say that she blew me away. She exuded strength and bravery. Her voice sounded phenomenal and she nailed every line and every note. I know she has always acted her songs but she was living them last night. It was beyond touching. It was so wonderful hearing "My Funny Valentine". I don't know how she got through "Time Heals Everything" but she once again proved to me that she is the consummate performer. She was also relaxed and quite candid at times. She laughed during "I'm Flying" - just like she was having so much fun and believing she was flying. I think she was having transcending experience during that song. When she was singing "Fever" it seemed that she got a little tangled in her dress so she sat up and put the microphone down which caused strange feedback. She picked it up and just gave us the most precious look. It was one of those classic looks that we all love. When she finished the curtain call she tried to leave but saw a young lady coming on the stage with a huge bouquet of roses for her and backed up - it was amusing. She also turned around and came back for some flowers that some girls had for her from the first row. After, we milled about. Noah found out that she would not be leaving through the stage door. There was a dessert reception so we all just stood around talking and taking pictures. The professional photographer was still there so Ashley asked him if he would take our picture again. This time our group grew by two as Charmaine and her son joined in. I wish you could have all been there with us for this phenomenal evening. We are all full of excitement for the May 1, 2006 concert at Avery Fisher Hall. It sounds like people will be flying in from all points again. Kevin appointed me to be the Event Coordinator. I think big so you all better mark your calendar!

(I know what Noah and Kevin look like because of previous pictures, but none of the ladies, I think. Oh, I know what Sister Rose looks like.)
Thank you for the reports. It makes my heart feel good, knowing that ya'll are going to the concerts.

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 10/23/2005 at 2:52:27 PM ET Oh, pictures, indeed! I just had a grand time figuring -- or guessing--who was who. I seem to have seen a few of you at events, although we haven't talked. You all look like anyone would be proud to have you as their "fanadettes".
Oh, and Noah, take care of those eyes (JOKE).
And someone, for heavens sake, print out the song list (don't make me have to go to BWW).
I'm very fond of her "My Funny Valentine"--I wonder if she'll record it for her new CD (which I assume is still on).

From: NYC | posted: 10/23/2005 at 4:31:14 PM ET LOL! Barstools! Karen 1 and I enjoyed a "few" beverages while PAFan made sure we didn't wander off to the seedy underbelly of Bethlehem (is there one? I really don't think so, unless its in the dark alley behind the crayola factory). Let's just say that I have a lot less brain cells today and I really hope that Karen 1 made her noon flight.
Once I have permission from everybody, I'll put the names up for y'all. I'm hoping that Ashley will be posting some more pictures soon!
Also, I didn't fill you in on much of the pre-Bethlehem preparations. Ashley had car trouble so she rented a car. I actually made the car reservation for her via Priceline for Budget. When Ashley called to confirm the car and tell them that we were on our way to pick it up, they told her they were running out of cars. (Seinfeld reference: They know how to TAKE the reservation, they just don't know how to HOLD the reservation.) She screamed at them that she didn't care if they gave her a bus because we had a very important even to get to out of town, at which point Noah and I got quite excited because of the dream for the Fanadette Bus! Anyway, we managed to get there in time to get the small Hyundai. It was a fine car, but we had to re-think our wardrobe because the ball gowns that we were taking for all of us to wear wouldn't fit in the car unless we tied Noah to the hood.
(PS - Noah and I saw Sweeney Todd on Thursday night from the 2nd row - my 3rd time and it has gotten even better)
(PPS - Noah, Ashley and I saw See What I Wanna See at the Public - wow - its so interesting - just mesmerizing. Idina Menzel proved that she can act. The entire cast is just wonderful. Note - this is NOT for young theatre goers and is heavy material)

I want to see it.
Great seeing everyone, and meeting new people. *Anticipating May "Gala" 2006*
I got home around 12:15 last night, but I was way too tired to go online.
There was definitely a difference between last night and the previous week. There was so much more emotion behind her voice last night. If anything it shows that process that she must be going through. Really trying to move on.
I did notice one thing. When she was singing "Time Heals Everything", and she sang the lyrics: I'll forget you by
Next year
Some year
She shook her head with a stern "No" as if she was saying, "No, I won't forget you."
Perhaps I'm just reading too much into things; but that was the impression I got.

That's a very interesting observation, Christine, and I'll bet you're right. I finally, just now, got a little choked up reading that.

Registered: 8/14/2003 | posted: 10/23/2005 at 5:43:52 PM ET Christine is absolutely right. She was definitely shaking her head in reference to what she was singing during Time Heals Everything. It was a very stern "NO" with both her head shake and her facial expressions.
Oh, and thanks for correcting me on Marvin's show title. I hadn't remembered that part being in the title.
Someone can fill in/correct this song list as needed. I am not sure if I've got everything.
