Ashley and I made it to the CBS Early Show. Vicki wimped out on us and slept in(who, p.s., just had a birthday on the 23rd and didn't bother to tell us)! We arrived and there were some of the dogs there all the time. We visited with the security guys the whole time and they were nice and funny. We didn't see any other people we recognized there - it was a smallish crowd. Judy Katz was there first and then Bernadette arrived around 7:45. She immediately ran to the dogs and greeted all of them. We were going to take a picture Ira Joe but then Bernadette came over and we just dropped him! haha. But then actually Ashley took a hysterical picture of Ira Joe posing with Bernadette - she'll post it here when she gets home. I took a picture of her and some guy at his request and she talked to me and wanted to know if I was coming to Bway Barks and I said of course! Ashley and I both got pictures with her. After she left, we finally got our picture with Ira Joe and I had one Russ. Then we saw Judy so we talked to her - she was very friendly - we asked her if Bernadette would be doing a signing and she said they were thinking about. She said that they would if Bernadette could work it in her schedule. She said she didn't know when the tickets for Avery Fisher Hall would be going on sale. She chatted with us about dogs, Bway Barks, concerts, etc. Okay - Noah and Mandy just arrived so must attend to my guests! Talk to you later!

Regis: I'm looking at you, you know, when I see you on stage, in these Sondheim musicals and these great roles...

Bernadette: I'm not as dippy.

Regis:...You are the personification of all that is, you know, sophisticated, magnificent, and here you are sitting next to me and you're stealing books!

I'm so bummed. I set my VCR this morning and apparently I didn't have enough tape left, so I missed the show. Can someone give me a quick recap?

They interviewed her about Broadway Barks and dog adoption. She said she adopted Kramer and Stella. They said she was a singer/songwriter! They talked about her new album too. She looked great and especially tiny - she wore jeans and a lavender tanktop and her hair was damp.

They mentioned that one of the astronauts had brought her CD with him. She also mentioned that all of the dogs in Chitty Chitty... are shelter dogs.

She introduced some of the dogs by breed and name. The puppies were eating ice cream, but Bernadette said it was ok, it was special doggy ice cream. (This is from memory, not exact.)

I agree she looked great (especially for such an early hour); she had on a diamond cross necklace, the usual right-hand pinky ring and I think the diamond wedding band. Couldn't see the shoes, her jeans were almost to the ground. On tv I couldn't tell that her hair was damp, but it did look kind of flat.

Her departing line, said over music or something, was something like "spay and neuter your dogs, just say no to sex for your dogs..." [not an exact quote but it struck me as pretty funny].

Sister Rose was respledent in a rose/pink top, while Ashley was conservative and very New York in black (did I get it right ladies?)

All have a fab day, I'll look for you around 46 Street on Broadway around 3:30.

(Oh, by the way, great reporting, Sister--thanks.)

HAHA! Yes, I was very sleek and very New York in black, and Sarah got all dressed up in a flowing pink skirt. All of this at 5.30 am. :-) I'm afraid we both just threw on jeans and shirts and headed out the door. But hey, Bernadette was in jeans and a tank top, so we were in good company. :-)

I was excited to be there but not quite resplendent! Hahaha. I don't think we were in camera's view - I was going to stand in the window at one point but I got distracted by the dogs, etc. It was fun going - especially since there were so few people there and Bernadette recognized me.

SHOW: The Saturday Early Show 7:00 AM EST CBS

July 30, 2005 Saturday

LENGTH: 995 words

HEADLINE: Bernadette Peters, singer/songwriter, discusses Broadway Barks and her new CD

ANCHORS: TRACY SMITH

REPORTERS: IRA JOE FISHER

BODY:

Announcer: We're THE SATURDAY EARLY SHOW with Russ Mitchell, Tracy Smith and Ira Joe Fisher coming to you from the General Motors Building on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

TRACY SMITH, co-host:

Thousands of dogs and cats will take center stage today for Broadway Barks, now in its seventh year. The event, created by Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters, helps finds homes for some animals now living in shelters. Bernadette Peters is here, along with some of her adoptable friends.

Good morning.

Ms. BERNADETTE PETERS (Singer/Songwriter): Good morning. I'm so happy to be here.

SMITH: We're so happy to have you.

Ms. PETERS: Yeah. Today's the Adoptathon. Can you believe this little doggy, Mr. Bingley, would be at the Adoptathon?

SMITH: Oh, Mr. Bingley. Oh, yes. Oh, oh, I love you, too. Oh, thank you.

IRA JOE FISHER reporting:

He's so cute.

Ms. PETERS: And this Greystoke, an Australian shepherd mix. He's a fabulous dog. They're very bright.

FISHER: Now that's Tarzan's actual real name--Greystoke. Lord Greystoke.

Ms. PETERS: Greystoke. Yes. That's right.

SMITH: Oh, very good trivia there, Ira. And who do you have?

FISHER: I have Kyra. And Kyra is being very camera shy right now.

SMITH: She wants to snug with you.

FISHER: Yeah.

Ms. PETERS: She's about three years, and she's a mix of a poodle and a dandie dinmont.

SMITH: So, Bernadette, let's talk about how this started. We're in our seventh year for the Adoptathon.

Ms. PETERS: Seventh year. Yes. Yeah.

SMITH: What inspired you to begin it?

Ms. PETERS: Well, Mary Tyler Moore and I started this. And we--after our dogs had died, we went to the city shelter to look at animals, and we couldn't believe the amount of wonderful dogs and cats that were in the shelters and what great animals that they were, plus pedigreed. They were cocker spaniels, they were poodles, there were all kinds of wonderful dogs in there. So we thought--and they're really, really just homeless. They've been aban--people had to move, people got allergies, people had babies and they couldn't keep their animals. Like this little guy was given up. They couldn't keep him, they couldn't take care of him. There's wonderful animals that needed our attention, and so we decided that we had to put together this Broadway Barks.

FISHER: How many did you adopt, Bernadette?

Ms. PETERS: I have two.

FISHER: All right.

SMITH: Kramer and Stella, right?

Ms. PETERS: Stella and Kramer. Yes.

SMITH: I love the names.

Ms. PETERS: And Broadway Barks is in Shubert Alley, and the whole Broadway community comes out between shows on a Saturday, and they meet the animals from all the shelters, and they bring them up on stage, and they get them adopted.

SMITH: That's fantastic. And I think you make a really good point that I think a lot of people expect a shaggy dog, a dog that has no potential.

Ms. PETERS: Yes.

SMITH: These dogs have so much potential that some of them are even appearing on Broadway now. Is that right?

Ms. PETERS: There's some in "Chitty Chitty--all the dogs in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" are rescued dogs. So the point being they're so smart that they're ready for show business.

FISHER: They are. You know what?

SMITH: And they must be smart to do that, right?

Ms. PETERS: Yes.

FISHER: That's wonderful.

Ms. PETERS: And there they are.

SMITH: There they are right there. Look at the talent on that stage.

FISHER: If they put on some weight, they could do weather.

Ms. PETERS: I want to mention that these dogs are from Animal Haven and the Humane Society if you should be interested in them.

FISHER: And lovely people are here as well.

SMITH: These are all available for adoption.

Ms. PETERS: And we have these puppies back here.

SMITH: Oh. So you can get puppies at shelters. Obviously. We have three right here.

Ms. PETERS: Oh, yes. Absolutely. Oh, and they're eating. This is--they're eating ice cream, but it's doggy ice cream. We're not just giving them any kind of stuff.

SMITH: OK. That's a very good point.

Ms. PETERS: That's cheese based.

FISHER: It's is the first time they've been quiet all morning, by the way.

Ms. PETERS: It's called--they love it. Look.

SMITH: Yeah. They've got the ice cream. Sure.

FISHER: They do. They do.

Ms. PETERS: It's called Dogsters. Now these puppies...

SMITH: What is that--go ahead. Go ahead.

Ms. PETERS: Oh, these puppies are Belgian-shepherd mixes, and they're eating right now. They're very happy.

SMITH: Absolutely adorable. You know, I love talking about the dogs, but you do other things, as well. You're a bit of a singer I guess you could say.

Ms. PETERS: I do. Yeah.

SMITH: And I know you have a new CD coming out on August 2nd.

Ms. PETERS: I do.

SMITH: This is the second part of the Sondheim concert from Carnegie Hall.

Ms. PETERS: Absolutely. There was enough that night--it was such a great night, and there was enough that night to put together another CD. And I wanted it not to go to waste. I wanted it to to be captured and that kind of thing.

FISHER: And this CD is on the space shuttle right now.

SMITH: That's right.

Ms. PETERS: Charles Camarda--Dr. Charles Camarda. He was from my neighborhood in Ozone Park, Queens. He took it up into space with him.

SMITH: That's fantastic. We know they have great music up there.

Ms. PETERS: That's right. The best part is he's going to bring it back and hand it to me to sign and give to him.

SMITH: Fantastic. Well, thank you so much for taking time out of your career to do this wonderful event.

Ms. PETERS: Oh, this is so important.

SMITH: And these guys thank you.

Ms. PETERS: Oh, yes. Go to the shelters, and spay and neuter your dogs or just say no to sex for them.

SMITH: All right. Thanks, Bernadette. If you want information about adopting a pet, you can log on to broadwaybarks.com. Mr. Bigley will thank you.

And Coming up next, our Chef on a Shoestring.

Ms. PETERS: Bye! Bye-bye!

SMITH: Bye!--serves up a tasty bit of American history and a little Chinese barbecue sauce, too. There he is busy at work. Stay with us. You're watching THE SATURDAY EARLY SHOW on CBS.

Thank you, Jean. So-Stella is still around, but no mention of Piggy? (isn't that the one mentioned in the Vero magazine)?

Yeah, apparently Stella is still around. No one knows what the deal with Piggy is. We were talking about that this weekend. We're confused.

Maybe Piggy is Stella's nickname?

I don't get it either.

Oh, yes, confused here, too:

from the Vero Beach article:

"a Staffordshire terrier named Piggy - "He looks like Piglet in the Winnie the Pooh books" "

it's quite detailed and specific.

Perhaps "Doc" could put in a call to Bernadette and straighten it out for us?

I already know the answer to your question.
The Staffordshire terrier is another name for a 'pit bull'.
(Can't give out to much information)
All I can say for now.....is that Piglet is staying with friends of BP's and being well taken care of.

*Nitpicky alert*

The American Staffordshire Bull Terriers (AmStaffs), American Pit Bull Terriers (APBTs), and the (English) Staffordshire Terrier are different breeds. They are from basically the same stock, but they were bred for different reasons. I believe Stella is AmStaff, if only partly. From what I recall, she looks AmStaff-ish.

The American breeds have been maligned in the press and have been abused by cruel and ignorant owners, but the (English) Staffordshire Terrier is actually called "the nanny dog" in England because of its nature with children. Interesting how similar breeds have been treated and viewed in the different countries. There are many rescue groups in the States that are dedicated to educating the public and owners and saving these dogs. Decent AmStaff and APBTs owners are quite passionate about their babies. The American breeds can be just as loving with children-although no dog should be left unsupervised with small ones (I know of a golden retriever who hurt a child)-but they are stocky dogs and won't back down if challenged (they require owners who will give them the love and care they so desire and who know how to handle them). These dogs have done well in obedience and therapy work. They are smart dogs and love having a purpose, as most dogs do. They require a lot of exercise, too! If you want a couch potato dog, get a Greyhound (though who can fault them? Rescuing those dogs can be so heartbreaking in the beginning. And they're good apartment dogs, too, for the most part.).

Not to pick on you, Doc, but there are some differences. There are enough misconceptions out there about these dogs. And the differences are small, but enough that they are separate.
/nitpick

Oh, Piggy....perhaps all was not well in the animal kingdom. Two AmStaffs together might be difficult. Thanks for letting us know that Piggy is OK.
