Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/10/2005 at 10:12:54 PM ET Thanks. I really appreciate being able to see the two line-ups together in the same thread, for comparison. Obviously, Wall-to-Wall Sondheim had a lot more time, and a more scholarly orientation, so they were able to delve into some of the more interesting obscurities. I'm sure they were both great events to attend, and I'm sorry someone wasn't able or willing to capture them for posterity for television and video/DVD. It's too bad that Bernadette had to miss Wall-to-Wall Sondheim in order to tape a dopey sitcom pilot that didn't sell anyway, but that's show biz, kids.

| posted: 7/10/2005 at 10:28:10 PM ET I do have to apoligize for the unbelievebly long setlist post. It looks obnoxious. Sorry guys.
The wall to wall event was supposedly recorded for a CD to be released in the future. Hopefully sooner than later.
Karen, did you attend either?

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 7/11/2005 at 4:08:58 PM ET A brief excerpt from the favorable review of the concert from Variety, July 11:
"As revues go, it was a combo of character studies and life lessons: "Joanna," featuring an underutilized Jubilant Sykes, and "In Buddy's Eyes" provided the former; "I'm Not Getting Married," with Carol Burnett articulating well through the whip-fast lyrics, and "Children Will Listen," buoyed by a dazzling Bernadette Peters, supplied the latter.
Peters and Elaine Stritch swapped signature numbers. Peters delivered a splendid "Being Alive" from "Company"; Stritch stormed the stage to open the second act and belted out "Broadway Baby." "

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/11/2005 at 6:23:19 PM ET Which prompts the question: since when has "Being Alive" ever been a signature number for Elaine Stritch?

Perhaps the writer has "Ladies Who Lunch" mixed up with "Being Alive?"
However, I haven't followed ES's career closely, so I may be missing something. But "Ladies Who Lunch" is her signature song, and like "Being Alive," is from Company. So I'm thinking that the writer confused the two. A very clumsy mistake, since the songs are nothing alike!

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 7/12/2005 at 8:39:24 AM ET From Variety, Army Archerd column, July 11:
"Angela Lansbury, who tripped over a cable heading to the Hollywood Bowl stage Friday for the final bow at the Stephen Sondheim 75th-birthday concert, will undergo knee-replacement surgery Thursday. She told me she originally injured her left knee on "The Santa Clause" in 1991. She admits the fall was "scary, but I was more embarrassed." Earlier she and Len Cariou brought down the house with "A Little Priest" from "Sweeney Todd." She admits the stage return was "like my old days on the Tony Awards. My true place is in the theater -- the rest is fun!" ... Angela will be hospitalized five days and in physical therapy for a month. Fortunately, she is not skedded to start any productions immediately ... Barbra Streisand, who with Warren Beatty and Marilyn Bergman presented a plaque to Sondheim, had made her first appearance singing at the Bowl in 1963 with Dave Brubeck, then in 1998 with Sammy Davis Jr. Despite the tumultuous reception, Barbra did not sing this time -- she'd just wound an album with Barry Gibb. And while Warren Beatty also did not sing -- Paul Williams whispered to me that Warren had indeed sung in "Ishtar." It was one of those rare nights and it raised $167,000 for the Children Will Listen program, which aims to bring children into the world of theatrical musicals ... Carol Burnett sparked "Not Getting Married," backed by the L.A. Phil, whose drummer for the concert was her husband, Brian Miller ... Burnett, whose "Once Upon a Mattress" airs on ABC during the holidays, now is talking to CBS about her legiter "Hollywood Arms" (co-written with daughter Carrie Hamilton) ... "
Ouch, thoughts for Angela...

And I guess that is another reason why Bernadette was having such a hard time getting Angela to her feet.

From: NYC | posted: 7/12/2005 at 9:59:16 PM ET Thanks everybody for sharing details. I wanted to be there - I was so fortunate to be at both Wall to Wall and Children & Art. While Children & Art was enjoyable, I don't know if I will have another experience like W2W. It was not only one amazing performance after another but was an extremely valuable learning experience for me - so much history that day. I'm still thinking about it. As far as there not being comedic moments at W2W - I have to disagree though. I was there for the entire 12 hours and there were plenty. And the Harvey Fierstein attempt at Rose's Turn at Children & Art was not comedic - it was just disgusting.
I hope Angela is okay after the surgery - not an easy event for an almost 80 year old. I'm glad it wasn't her hip.

Registered: 8/14/2003 | posted: 7/12/2005 at 10:21:45 PM ET Well I wasn't even going to bother to post since everyone else seems to have summed up the concert very well. I really enjoyed it. I agree that Bernadette seemed a little off/tight during Being Alive (maybe some sound issues as well having to sprint to the microphone contributed too) but I thought she did a fantastic job on Children Will Listen. She absolutely cracked me up during the Opening Doors number. I think my favorite moment was seeing Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou sing "A Little Priest." Overall, a great evening in a beautiful setting. All the best to Angela Lansbury. May she have a speedy and complete recovery!
EDIT: Oh, and I LOVED BP's dresses! She wore two of my absolute favorites...the white one and the embroidered one from the 2000 Tony's.

Registered: 8/14/2003 | posted: 7/13/2005 at 8:39:27 PM ET Not to completely turn this into an Angela Lansbury thread but it seems as though her surgery had been previously planned and more a result of years of dancing rather than the fall at the Hollywood Bowl (which I am sure didn't help matters.) In any event...best wishes for a speedy recovery.
