Review? Not the greatest movie in the world is being kind though Bernadette (as usual) has some nice moments.

Its a strange story - its wonderful that Bernadette is in it and she looks great - but very strange and quirky - I found it hard to follow. Its a James Ivory film, but doesn't have the beauty of his collaborative efforts with Ismael Merchant. It kind of reminds me of "Desperately Seeking Susan" - New York underworld art scene. It certainly doesn't show the glamorous side of living in New York.

By most conventional standards, this is probably a pretty terrible film, but two things stand out for me: the stunning visual design (the light is captured beautifully), and Bernadette's perfect and seamless embodiment of a saintlike "holy fool" wandering through a landscape of utter human folly. Her portrayal of Eleanor is as natural, transparent, and effortless as acting can get.

I agree with Karen.
Jenn, if you have some time, look at the reviews (I just did a quick Lexis-Nexis for March 1989)--if I weren't such a loyal, watch-everything fan, those very negative reviews would completely turn me off this movie.
As it is, I find it oddly enjoyable, a guilty pleasure (topped only by "Pink Cadillac").
"The right Eleanor was more elusive. ''It's amazing in New York,'' says Mr. Ivory, ''but out of 100 girls, there was not a single one with Miss Peters's originality. We wanted someone unusual and different but also ingenuous and not too knowing.'' The moment she read the script, says Miss Peters, she identified with Eleanor. Feminists have criticized the character for her passivity. But Miss Peters, who is best known as a star of Broadway musicals, most recently ''Into the Woods,'' saw ''someone who hadn't discovered herself yet. Eleanor was me seven or eight years ago, before I became conscious.'' She adds, ''And she wants a baby.'' "

This is an old topic, but I just bought the DVD the other day, and I try not to start new threads if it's not necessary. lol
Anyway, I hadn't seen this movie in a long time. I like it better than then I did when I was younger. Not the greatest movie (it never was), but it's an interesting spin and truth on part of New York City in the 1980's.
There IS a Special Feature on the DVD. A Behind-the-Scenes/Making Of with interviews. Bernadette has a few things to say about the film. If you don't like the movie, don't buy it; but definitely rent it to see that feature.

Sounds like a Netflix pick. Thanks for letting us know. I only saw the movie once, and really don't remember that much about it.

I must say that I love this movie! Maybe it's terrible, but I love it! There are very few movies that I can actually watch over and over again and this is one of them. Of course there are weird parts that I do fast-forward through, but I just really like how it's a New York movie. I didn't know the DVD had extra features, I think I'll have to look into that :-) ( I don't know how to make the real wink.. ho-hum)

Hello, I'm new here but have been reading all your interesting Bernadette posts for months. Thank you, all, it is a great way to keep up with all the BP news and concert reports. Since we don't see Bernadette in this country very often I haven't felt like I had anything to add to this forum except perhaps simply to state my great love and admiration for this wonderful woman both as a performer and as the great human being she appears to be - a rare combination these days. But I just had to respond to this "Slaves of New York" thread as it is one of my very favourite films of all time.
I could go on for ever about how I think this film is so special but I'll spare you all that torture. Suffice to say that I connect to this film probably because life for me at that time in London was so like life in New York for Bernadette's character in the film. That is the great thing about Merchant/Ivory films, they sum up and document the feeling and mood of the period so well. I am also so grateful that the brilliant team of Merchant/Ivory made a film with Bernadette Peters as I am sure it will stand as a testament to it's time and to their talent and most of all as a testament to her great talent.
as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

I agree about the film. I actually think it's quite a masterpiece. It's an acquired taste; but it definitely hits on a certain time period and culture.
Bernadette has had a lot of "interesting" roles in films. That's one of the great things about her as an actress. She tends to do things for the art more so than the money or recognition. Have you seen the film "Let it Snow"? I think it's another artsy choice on her part.

I'm eagerly awaiting SONY from Netflix (along with Walk the Line and Return to Oz).
On another note, the Silent Movie DVD will be released April 4 (that's what Netflix says).

It's a movie that keeps growing on me. It took a long time and repeated viewings before I could get into the rhythmn of its humor. The first time I saw it in the theater when it was first released, I disliked it so much, I almost walked out. The timing felt completely off and flat. Eventually I realized that the filmmakers were purposely putting the stress on unexpected moments in each scene. I still think it has some major flaws, but it has a very distinctive taste and it lingers in the mind in a way that a lot of more celebrated films don't.
And, welcome Scottie. I enjoyed your post.
