From: northern VA | posted: 6/5/2005 at 10:58:56 PM ET OK-the orchestra is cutting in WAY too soon. But it is right at 10/11 EST.
That was anticlimatic. So-everyone happy? Surprised? Disapppointed?

But yeah, the orchestra cut it off at the end, and they were cutting people off who were making speeches, which I understand they were under time constraints...but it seemed that they were giving some people more time than others.

1) Bernadette's gowns this year were seriously glamourous, perhaps my favorites that I've seen her in in the last few years (Tonys, that is); her jewelry probably meant there was a very large man trailing after her
2) good for her that she opened the show, she makes me smile
3) I'm curiously unmoved by the show this year (Tony Award show, to be precise)
4)I care not who won/lost, but I'm happy for Cherry Jones

Registered: 8/12/2002 | posted: 6/5/2005 at 11:05:33 PM ET She sung "Another Op'nin', Another Show" from Kiss Me, Kate. But it was only like a minute or so you saw her onstage, and then they cut to clips of the nominated shows, with her occasionally singing in the background.
And yeah, I wasn't all that impressed with the show this year either.

From: northern VA | posted: 6/5/2005 at 11:24:22 PM ET I'm not the only one? That makes me feel better-I'm glad it's not just me. I wouldn't miss a Tony broadcast, but I was underwhelmed. I didn't have a clear favorite this year, and there wasn't any unexpected dramas/upsets-like last year-that made it memorable. The awards seemed fairly spaced out from what I recognized (I could be wrong). And they seemed very pressed for time-they always are-but I don't remember the orchestra playing over the big final winners at the end.
It seemed very fair, the winners, save a few, were expected, and that usually leads to a low key awards show.
EDIT: glancing over the posts on other boards...there are quite a few folks who feel the same. I think the Tony producers need to rethink how they do things.

From: NYC | posted: 6/5/2005 at 11:32:10 PM ET Jesse L. Martin sang "Razzle Dazzle" because Jerry Orbach originated that role in Chicago.
Bernadette looked ultra-glamorous this evening - WOW!
Great night but Hugh's dance with the Rockettes last year was priceless. I loved Christina's "fall" - very funny. The Crystal thing was initially funny but lasted way too long. Hooray for 6 Tonys for Light in the Piazza! Hooray for Victoria Clark, Norbert Leo Butz, Dan Fogler, Bill Irwin & Cherry Jonesfor winning! My disappointments were that Gem of the Ocean and DRS was ignored and that Spamalot won best musical. Oh well, can't win 'em all.

From: Ohio | posted: 6/5/2005 at 11:40:06 PM ET Yeah I was extremely dissapointed in the show this year! I thought that all the little comic bits they tried to do before anouncing the winners were annoying and took up too much time. I liked it better a couple of years ago when they announced the shows before they performed(like when Bernadette did Roses turn and they interviewed her...I didn't like how they just went into things). There wasn't enough Hugh Jackman. Yay for Light in the Piazza-LOVE IT!!!! I'm dissapointed it didn't win best musical-grrrrrrrrrr. And I'm happy for Cherry Jones and Bill Irwin-but sad for Kathleen Turner. Bernadette looked wonderful and I agree--this was one of the best gowns I've seen her in. Here's hoping next year is better!!!

Ok, I know that now, but....oh, I don't know. The whole thing seemed a little unusual. That's all. If it was for Jerry Orbach, why not "Try to Remember" (off-Broadway, I know)-choosing "Razzle Dazzle" is just a bit odd to me, but that's just my opinion. quote: I liked it better a couple of years ago when they announced the shows before they performed(like when Bernadette did Roses turn and they interviewed her...I didn't like how they just went into things)
Yes. That was a nice touch. I do not remember that being done last year, and it's a shame. They didn't seem rushed for time last year either. I don't know-there was something off this year. I don't think it was a complete disaster, as some on other boards are saying, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I watch the Tonys every year, and this year was different to me, and not in a good way. I'm happy for the winners, and I'm especially happy for Adam Guettel. I am so pleased he won, and I hope his next shows do come to Broadway. He couldn't have been cuter in his acceptance speech, and he seemed happy and overwhelmed to have won. I like to see that in the winners. Broadway needs him. I can't overlisten to Light in the Piazza, although I do feel for the harpist in the orchestra!
If the CBS folks could relax a little about the time, the ATW could relax too. But it's ratings. Ratings, ratings, ratings. And no matter how many TV anf film stars they coax with gift bags to appear on the show, the Tonys will not be a ratings grabber like the Oscars or Grammys, even though those shows have lost viewers as well. But it's not the same. Sure they could put it on PBS or Bravo, but some PBS affiliates may decide to not run it, and not everyone gets Bravo (or you have to go beyond standard cable to get it). So moving it to those networks would mean some people would not get to see it.
Unfortunately, it's not like there's a bidding war for the Tonys. And CBS is aware of that, and I'm sure that affects the ATW.

And, no, I haven't seen Applegate live, but all the internet and television footage I've seen has led me to believe that she should never have been cast. Just my (usual uninformed) opinion.

From: northern VA | posted: 6/6/2005 at 12:39:30 AM ET Well, good night to you all. Another theatre season and Tony Awards broadcast has come and gone. Lots of happiness and heartbreak in both, I imagine. Despite what anyone thinks of the winners, the shows that made it and the shows that didn't, or the broadcast, there's another season due to start up again sooner than we expect, and there will be new shows to discover and love, new shows that will make some question the sanity of the producers, revivals of shows for a new generation, and something we haven't seen in a while-another "British invasion" courtesy of Mary Poppins and Andrew Lloyd Webber, and perhaps Billy Elliot? The Jerry Springer musical? And somewhere in all that, Patti LuPone (no, not in the British invasion, poor lamb), if the stars align just right for her.
Have a good week, everyone.

From: tonawanda,n.y. | posted: 6/6/2005 at 11:16:23 PM ET I saw La Cage in Buffalo many years ago and have the beautiful CD. It maybe be "old school"to some, but the songs are beautiful-especially "I am what I am" and " song on the sand" and EVERY song is hummable! The ending song "The best of times are now" sung by the cast is very today.I suggest anyone who can get to see it -DO! I was disappointed they did the "Can-Can" number in the beginning..it is not representative of the show. Should have done "The Best of Times..."
As much as I love Sondheim, it is true not all of his songs are hummable, though it is a different type of score. Sometimes I wish they had a more catching melody.Sorry- I am not! Avenue Q has a very catchy score, and it was a great show, but different. Why can't we have them both?! No other composer should knock another's great work(if indeed it IS great- shame on Herman for doing so! But, I like melodic singing and dancing in a show. Bring it on!
And I would see La Cage again- and again- so there!
To the loveliest lady of song!
You will keep on giving me joy forever...

From: northern VA | posted: 6/7/2005 at 9:12:58 AM ET Patty, please reread my post regarding Herman and his comments regarding his remarks on his remarks. Only he knows if he was directly commenting on Sondheim.
And "old school" is not a slam on a Herman. As I said in my earlier post: quote: Before anyone gets defensive, let me add that this is *not* a slam against his talent. His contributions to Broadway, both his successes and flops, are immeasurable.
But shows like Hello, Dolly! Mame, etc are really just not around anymore. That's all. And ya know, that's not entirely a good thing. It would be nice to have a balance.
The fact that La Cage's score is so accessible, memorable, and catchy (I *hate* that word, but what the heck) made it appealing to audiences that might have looked askance at the subject matter. And that's an incredible gift. That same gift is why people insist on tinkering with Mack and Mabel-my goodness, that score-people are good and determined that.it.will.work.somehow!
No one here was dismissing La Cage. Quite the opposite! It was an incredible collaboration between Herman, Fierstein,Scott Salmon, and Laurents, and it was a wonderful comeback. "I Am What I Am" has been sung (and oversung) by so many, but it remains such a powerful song, and something unique in 1984. And now the revival just won a Tony.
Jenn, ready for the Mame revival

| posted: 6/7/2005 at 9:41:31 AM ET Don't forget "Hello Dolly" as well! The Nederlander(sp) Organization has drawn up a deal with Jerry Herman in which La Cage is the 1st of three revivals set to open in the near future.
By the way, I also feel that "La Cage Aux Folles" was the incorrect number to perform at the tonys and they should have stuck with "I am" and "we are" as initially planned. The show unfortuanlty will not last much longer as it is at 38% attendence last week on playbill...
