From: Boston | posted: 3/20/2005 at 1:23:28 AM ET There are no words to describe the day I shared with Sister Rose and PAFan. We were so fortunate to get member/priority access in to the concert (I would say 80% of the people in line didn't get into the show at all!). Our seats were 7th row and it was a truly incredible day.
So you're asking yourself "Wait, what?! Bernadette WAS there?"
mmmhmm.
Jonathan Schwartz introduces himself and right away he said "someone special is joining us live" and there she was, her voice being broadcast live into the theatre from California! (And it was early for her too, it was noon our time). These aren't EXACT quotes, but here is some of the dialogue as I recall it...
"Bernadette, are you there?"
"Yes!"
"Where are you?"
"On my couch in my apartment in Los Angeles."
(Jean, were you aware this existed? )
"We are truly saddened you aren't here, Bernadette"
"I know I really wish I was. Happy Birthday Steve, I love you!" (awww) I know, right)
she went on to say how Sondheim is so extraodinary and the great gift he has given her...and so on.
A little bit later Jonathan Schwartz introduced John Weidman and said "He is so nice, everyone loves him. I mean it, he's the Bernadette Peters of men."
Highlights off the top of my head from today were (not in any order)
* JOHN DOSSETT/WIFE MICHELLE - John got a lot to sing today and he sounded marvelous. He didn't get to show what he was really capable of in Gypsy (which only had one song in the show, and none from West Side Story--hmm?)
* Patti LuPone
* ANGELA/GEORGE --AH-MAH-ZINGGGG, I can't believe I got to see this live!
* Donna Murphy (and so nice, talked to me for a few minutes afterward, she knows my voice teacher and visited my school and had great things to say about it which was nice)
* Debra Monk
* ELAINE STRITCH--how many 19 year old's can say they have witnessed her LADIES WHO LUNCH live - TWICE? (At Liberty)
* Marin Mazzie/Jason Daniely
* Carolee/Greg (FANTASTIC)
* MICHAEL CERVERIS (sang a lot during the day, and was also super nice, we were in the men's room together and chatted )
* BARBARA COOK - shes the real deal. SOO grateful I finally got to see her in person.
(I'll probably edit this post as I think of more, as you can probably imagine, the 3 of us are on a bit of a high and literally replaying it now).

From: NYC | posted: 3/20/2005 at 2:07:46 AM ET It is 2:00 AM and I'm ready for the 2nd act to start! IT WAS AMAZING! THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD HAVE MADE IT BETTER AT ALL WAS IF BERNADETTE HAD BEEN THERE IN PERSON. It was dreamlike most of the day and I know I will be high for the weeks to come until we're in Boston for the concert. Symphony Space did a phenomenal job on the planning - everything was perfect - I wouldn't change a thing (except maybe the strange beatnick blues/jazz version of Being Alive that was totally horrible and the woman admitted that it was really hard to deconstruct Sondheim so Chip suggested that she shouldn't ha ha). Seeing so many of the best in this business was just amazing and hearing the talks was great too. I shed tears all day long as it was so emotional to be there. Hearing Elaine, Angela, Patti, Barbara Cook and more all in one day doesn't seem real to me. My favorite guys were John D (of course), Michael Ceveris and Patrick Cassidy. It was also pretty cool seeing all of the married people sing the "love" songs that Sondheim is so brilliant at - John/Michelle, Carolee/Greg, Marin/Jason. It was obvious that the performers were having a phenomenal time too. We saw a lot of them after the show and they seemed high too. Some of them - Patrick Cassidy even was concerned about our backsides when he heard that we were there for 12 hours. Actually we arrived at the line at 8:45 and they didn't let us in until almost 11:00 am. It was worth the wait - from the very beginning each and every performer was amazing (except the blues beatnick lady). I'm sorry not everybody who weren't Symphony Space members (thanks to mine and PAFan's forethought) weren't able to get in but that's the breaks, kiddos.
PS XM Radio is going to produce a live cd so you'll be able to experience this day that we did today.

I was there with you in spirit if not actually, and I may have 4 hours on casette tape (remember that?)--then again, I may not-haven't listened to other than the Bernadette interview.
Just one minor comment about our lovely John Dossett-no, we didn't see nearly what he could do in Gypsy (it's Rose's show, really). I saw him, twice, in A Little Night Music at the Kennedy Center and he really impressed me as the lead Frederick--great singing, great acting, and not afraid to look just a little foolish. And I like the way he looks. This man is the real deal.

Bernadette is on file 01, at the end. (I haven't been able to download file 11.)

From: NYC | posted: 3/20/2005 at 2:57:57 PM ET According to the press release to Playbill on Friday, Bernadette was still on the list of performers. Fingers crossed.
Sondheim 75
However, even if she can't make it, it will still be magnificent!

| posted: 3/20/2005 at 5:18:02 PM ET I also attended the Wall-to-Wall Sondheim celebration and can't say anything that hasn't been said. Wonderful Wonderful 12 hours. Noticed Chip 1012, PAfan and sister rose there! The highlights for myself were as follows:
Donna Murphy singing "Losing my Mind"
patti Lupone "Being Alive"
Carolee Carmello and Greg Edelman "Move On"
Carolee Carmello "There won't be trumpets"- My favorite Sondheim song!
Angela Lansbury and George Hearn- A Little Priest
Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley singing "Happiness."
A Weekend In The Country" from A Little Night Music - performed by Laura Benanti, Kate Baldwin, John Dossett, Randy Graff, Danny Gurwin and Michael Cerveris
"Could I Leave You?" from Follies - performed by Randy Graff
Joanna Gleason singing "The Boy from ..."
The selections from Assassins were all wonderful especially since I am least fmailar with that score.
So happy and thrilled I went yesterday!

From: NYC | posted: 3/20/2005 at 5:50:51 PM ET Agreed!
It was also exciting to hear some performers that I wasn't familiar with - plus a few who aren't on Bway very often these days - like Liz Calloway. Wow. I'm listening to the mp3s posted by Matt from Broadwayworld.com - just fantastic.
