I haven't gotten any new Bernadette Peters CDs recently and I'm feeling the need to buy! haha.
I already have Gypsy, Song and Dance, SITPWG, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Sondheim Etc...
But I was wondering if any of you guys here have a favorite, sort of a MUST HAVE.

A cd entitled BERNADETTE (early 80s but VERY good)...I love the cast recording of DAMES AT SEA also with her...her voice is so young and fresh but it's still her and it's wonderful.

A favorite of mine is "The Goodbye Girl". Fun and wimsical songs! I think its defently overlooked in cast recordings of BP.

Hello Jamie-
Get Mack and Mabel. It's a great score (Jerry Herman in addition to having two great performances recorded in song-Bernadette and Robert Preston (of The Music Man fame). Bernadette is quite young (but older than she was in Dames at Sea-I think she's 25 or near it).
The recording also has "Time Heals Everything"-very interesting to hear her sing it as a twenty-something,then listen to her sing it as a 50-something on Sondheim Etc.

I agree with the others; in order of my idea of what's missing from your CD collection that is essential:
1 (tie)--Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers and Hammerstein (2002)--her latest and most mature, lush and heart-felt;
1 (tie)--Mack And Mabel (1974)--Jenn said it;
2--"Bernadette" -- fun to hear her sing some pop-disco-standards in the style of the 80"s (actually issued in 1992, but contains songs from her first two solo albums from 1980 & 1981--yes they were actually "albums" and I have one)
Everything else. Don't forget
Anyone Can Whistle (1995), a
concert version of the 1964 musical.

A friend of my cousin's gave me an extra copy of the Goodbye Girl cast recording he had in his large collection (something that I probably wouldn't have bought)and quickly grew a fondness for it.

Is Bernadette on the Anyone Can Whistle CD? I love The Goodbye Girl. My Rules is so funny. So is Good News/Bad News.

Yes, she plays Fay on the concert recording. Major highlights are "Anyone Can Whistle" and "See What it Gets You."

Looking at everyone's recommendations, you realize that her discography is so relatively small, that almost all of what she's recorded is essential for fans. Is Bernadette the most underrecorded major performer of all time? I don't know if it's a function of her perfectionism, or what, but it's kind of depressing that she has left such a meagre permanent record on CD.

Well,I don't know who you would consider major/not major,but here are some numbers I found. Comparing Bernadette,Mandy Patinkin,and Patti LuPone:
Solo Cds:
Bernadette=5 Cds
Mandy Patinkin=6 Cds
Patti LuPone=2 Cds
Show CDs:
Bernadette=7 Cds
Mandy Patinkin=4 Cds
Patti LuPone=7 Cds
Other Recordings (live concerts,songs for movies/TV,etc)
Bernadette=8 (Sondheim:Etc is included with her solo CD count. These numbers include such recordings as the songs for animated movies and the Annie soundtrack.)
Mandy Patinkin=14 CDs (Mandy has recorded some audiobooks)
Patti LuPone=7 Cds (no songs for movies)
I did not count compilation Cds including songs already recorded. Mandy does appear on two Cds that are out of print/difficult to find (Mandy's songs on the Chicago Hope soundtrack are not available on the U.S. soundtrack but are available in Germany,and he appears on a CD that is out of print),so those would increase his count. I included Patti's Sunset Boulevard in her show CDs even though I think it may be out of print.
So,unless I'm missing a CD or two (very likely-Bernadette's website needs a discography-Mandy's and Patti's sites do),here are the totals:
Bernadette=20 Cds
Mandy=24 Cds
Patti=16 Cds
This is not the most scientific count. If anyone is interested,I can post the recordings I found,and ya'll can tell me if I'm missing something.
Am I missing something,or is Mandy absent from the Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert? I just realized that. I don't know the time frame-could that have been Chicago Hope time (or when he was ill)? Because Bernadette and Patti are both on the Carnegie Hall concert and the Hey,Mr. Producer concert,and I was trying to find a recording in which all three would appear. I thought of the Carnegie concert,but I realized that he wasn't there.

Very interesting comparative stats. If I were a big Patinkin or LuPone fan (which I'm not) I'm sure I would find them underrepresented on recordings too.
Part of it is that Bernadette is so committed to her Sondheim material, that the range of what she's recorded is somewhat limited. There are so many songs that I would love to hear her sing, but she probably never will. That's one of the reasons her Rodgers and Hammerstein CD was such a delight.
I guess it's best to just accept what's available and be grateful for it. By the way, Jenn, I think your count must be a little off, because I counted 20 CDs in my collection, and it's far from complete.

I just did a very quick-and-dirty count and came up with a total of 25. But, I counted "Fall from Grace" (lots of gospel? songs), "What the Deaf Man Heard" (sings My Ship...at the end), and "The Jerk" (who can forget Bernadette and Steve singing "Tonight You Belong to Me"), as well as the usual movies, concerts, solo recordings, etc.
I counted "Bernadette" (1992) only once, but actually should have counted "Bernadette" (1980) and "Now Playing" (1981).
I also counted "Flirting With the Edge" and "Dress Casual" but not ""Broadways Greatest Gifts: Carols for a Cure" (1999, where she sings a few bars of White Christmas with the AGYG cast).
Will someone kindly do a complete list, then we can ask Kevin to post it somewhere. Jenn, how about posting your list and we can all take a look at it.
Just because you all are working/schooling doesn't mean you can't take time off for this very important job.

I think what's amazing beside the fact that she has made a great number of recordings...is the length she stays in these shows when she signs on...It's incredibly difficult to compare that with many people because most won't do a long run like that. I'm not sure how long Lupone stayed in Evita or Anything Goes...I really enjoy her a lot as well...but I think when it comes to kindness(not demanding ungodly sums of money per performance) and staying in for the long run Bernadette beats MANY people.

Yeah, I definitely think Bernadette much prefers performing live to studio recording.
