...there was The Mac Davis Christmas Special.

Anyone catch this one?

I quote poster Sue,from the rec.arts.tv newsgroup:

"Anybody remember a TV movie from about 1979 called 'The Mac Davis
Christmas Special'?

It starred singer Mac Davis and Bernadette Peters. It took place in
the future (sci-fi being

all the rage in the post-Star Wars pop culture world), where Christmas
had evolved into

a strictly commercial observance called Commerce Day. By the end of the
show, Jesus

appears to the couple's two materialistic kids and sets them straight on
what the holiday was supposed to be about.

I remember it was pretty entertaining, in a cheesy late-70s kinda way,
but not surprisingly, I haven't seen it aired since.

I'm sure it's the very defibnition of 'dated'!"

End quote.

Yes, I remember this Christmas special, too, rather vividly...and in fact, I'd love to find it on DVD. (I don't remember the part about Jesus's appearing, though, only the sirens as the police came to haul the family away for celebrating Christmas, instead of Commerce Day.) Too bad it wasn't broadcast during subsequent Christmas seasons, but, it probably hit a bit too close to home for any commercial sponsors to want to touch it. Oh, well.

Please let me know if it's ever released to DVD!

As I remember it was in the early 70s. I remember i had a cassette recorder (before the invention of the walkman or VHS) and recorded the show on cassette and listened to it. I too have been searching for a copy of this somewhere in any form or fashion.
