| posted: 8/29/2004 at 3:34:36 PM ET Hello everyone. I'm taking a week's vacation and visiting my niece, Rebecca, in Maryland. I first went to babysit last night so Mommy and Daddy could go to a Ravens Football game. I came prepared to begin Rebecca's education on Broadway and everything Bernadette.
I popped in the London Concert DVD. We watched most of We're In the Money while I explained to Rebecca that this was what Broadway Royalty looked like. At three months her attention span is not the greatest and well, it is Sondheim which would be difficult for even the most intelligent of 3 month olds (Which I assure you she is! )
So I skipped ahead and stoppped at Some People. Well the moment it started, she was enthralled. "We" sang and danced the part, pointing our hands when Rose was angry and within a few seconds, Rebecca clenched her fists and started bouncing her arms all on her own. And her attention stayed on the screen the entire time. We even did "the walk" at the end before "Not Rooooooosssssseeeee!". Clearly the child was born with the intelligence to know good music and an exceptional performer. My sister got a picture of her watching the TV. I'll get it posted for you eventually.
I'll be back for visits several more times this week. We'll have to tackle more of the concert and listen to more cast albums. I have so little time and so much to teach.

I'll never forget a few years ago, a two year old I babysat all of the time went through the "mine" phase. Everything was hers and no one could touch her toys. She was sitting in her Pooh chair once and singing to the tune of Being Alive, "Nobody sit in my chair and ruin my sleep"

May I suggest that Barney movie? And how about those big shaggy dancing -uh oh I don't know what they are--on the Muppet show she was on.
Welcome back to MD--hot as hell, isn't it?

At that age, my niece couldn't handle much more then sing-along folk music of the Peter, Paul and Mary/The Weavers ilk, or Baroque stuff. She was fine with Bach, but Debussey literally made her cry and become agitated. The first musical she could listen to with enjoyment was "The Music Man." Now, at 10, she loves Rodgers and Hammerstein and Andrew Lloyd Webber. No Sondheim yet, but she's very smart so I'm hopeful. I love your story though.
And Annie, the two year old singing in the chair is priceless.

| posted: 8/30/2004 at 11:10:11 AM ET Well I'm glad you enjoyed the story and appreciate you all humoring me in regard to Rebecca's "advanced intelligence". And the story about the 2 year old is hysterical!
Jean, I have such an aversion to Barney that I'm afraid I will not be the one introducing that big purple thing to her. It is my hope that no one introduces her to it. But I will have to get at least a copy of the song that Bernadette sings in the movie. Later this week, I'll be alone with her and have more time so hopefully we can really concentrate on our lessons.
And yes it is hot! I'm mellllllttttttiiiiiiinnnnnngggggg!!!!!!!
