Is there any chance of Bernadette writing
an autobiography? I would so love to read
it, as I'm sure would you all.
What could she call her book?
Bernadette's Turn? Nah, that's too
corny. Any ideas?

Well Sondheim wants it to be called "I Don't Do Nude", according to the commentary on the SITPWG DVD. 
I think it would be a fascinating read considering the roles she has had the people she has worked with but I'm not holding out any hope. She seems to really cherish her private life so I doubt she would write an autobiography. JMO

During the early stages of SITPWG, James Lapine was still writing a lot of the show. The second act was in fact only presented at the last performance of the workshop portion. When they decided to take it to Broadway, the 2nd act was really developed. Anyway, Lapine had the idea that at the end of the last scene where you see Marie, she would pull the old lady garb off and reveal herself to be the artist's model (like Dot) beneath because Seurat's inspiration was always there to inspire George II. It was based on one of Seurat's paintings of a nude, I believe. Anyway, when Lapine presented this idea to Bernadette, her response was "I'm sorry, I don't do nude" and apparently Sondheim and Lapine found her response quite funny.

Actually Bernadette spoke of nudity in performances once. I think I read the quote on All That Chat but it was from some sort of interview that Bernadette gave. It was something along the lines that nudity forces the actress to break character because of the audience response to nudity. For at least several minutes they would not be viewing her as her character but instead thinking to themselves, "So that's what Bernadette looks like naked". No matter how hard an actor tries, she is going to lose the audience for those few minutes. And she is absolutely correct, particularly in this country where we are still a little too tied to our Puritan past. Anyway, that was her reasons and it makes it sound like it was not the nudity she was actually objecting to.

My opinion?
Book: She might write something, but probably never a memoir or autobiography. Why should she? I think her attitude is that her life is nobody else's business. And she's right.
Nudity: Not really. Not unless you really stretch the definition to include something like the motel scene in Pink Cadillac where she was naked under a sheet. But you don't get to see anything good even if you stop the film, zoom in and use a magnifying glass, so that doesn't really count.
I always thought moljul's paraphrased quote (which I don't remember seeing elsewhere) was pretty funny and almost kind of naive in a way. I mean, really now. "Those few minutes?" "At least several minutes?" Come on, Bernadette! Don't be so modest. Maybe that would be all the time that some people's bodies would inspire. But not yours!

About the children's book and the song--I think we will see them out in time for this year's Broadway Barks. Maybe together, like the Dooey - Do -It that she did.

Thanks for the Steve Martin quotation. There's a really complicated relationship between a performer and an audience. Anyone famous up there on stage, screen or even in a still photo is in the process of fuelling millions of anonymous fantasies, whether they're naked or fully clothed/just standing there or doing something sexual. They're collaborating in their own objectification. Everyone who becomes a performer has to be, on some level, willing and eager for that kind of transaction between themselves and the invisible audience members. Sometimes I wonder though if they eventually come to dread or regret it. If you think about it too long and hard, you start to realize how creepy it really is (or can be).
But, yes, it's very disingenuous to pretend that nudity and sex scenes are there for any reason other than to intensify the already present voyeurism. So it's just a matter of whether an individual performer enjoys raising the stakes a little higher like that. I'm sure some performers find that idea exciting while others find it more than a little dismaying.

I haven't seen anything about the book in Publishers Weekly or in the other trade publications (I could have missed something, however), and a search for forthcoming titles in the Books in Print database brings nothing (the database allows you to search for titles published within five months).

Of course there's a good chance that it will be privately produced as a promotional item for Broadway Barks and not commercially published.
