Just curious...those of you who own or have heard her self titled album "Bernadette"--what's your favorite song(s)...and is it just me or is this cd amazingly heart wrenching. ahhhh...it's so wonderful but it's so sad...it's like a big break up cd or something. I think my fav. song is "Dont" and "Pearl's a Singer"

"Take off your jacket!"--Joan Rivers to Bernadette
"TAKE OFF YOUR DRESS!!"--Bernadette's reply.

Yeah, I love it too. I agree, it's like "the ultimate torch song collection." I only wish the record company hadn't been so chintzy and only included about two thirds of the songs from her 2 LPs onto the CD. The 6 missing songs are also really good, especially "Dedicated to the One I Love" and "Weekend of a Private Secretary." Of the ones that made it to the CD, I'm especially moved by "Don't," "You'll Never Know," and "I Don't Know Why/Mean to Me." The emphasis on loneliness, desertion, and emotional masochism puts me in mind of "Alone," the Judy Garland/Gordon Jenkins concept album from the fifties. Judy even sang her own version of "Mean to Me" on that. It's really interesting to do a "compare and contrast" between the two interpretations of the song. Judy almost had a slight smile lurking far in the back of her voice, while Bernadette has a sob. Anyway, yeah, like you said, it's a wonderful and heart wrenching recording.

I love Gee Whiz and I don't know the titles but the one with the words "Why must you be mean to me" or something along thost lines.

"Oh no, you won't. No, not a chance. No arguements, shut up and dance."

That recording of "Broadway Baby" is as good as if not better than any other time she's sung it. "Only Wounded" and "I Never Thought I'd Break" are also spectacular.
