To my luck, I was told where her fans were waiting and it was inside the building in a small, private room. There were only about 15 people waiting so it was a nice, small croud. Bernadette came out about 20 minutes later and she literally stopped and talked with each person. She spent at least FIVE minutes talking with just me! She was so friendly and nice. She took pictures and was very generous. I have met her several times before (in NYC, Tulsa, and Kansas City) after her concerts. She continues to demonstrate just how much she cares about her fans. I will put up a review and song list of her show after I go on Sunday (front row)!

To my surprise, she did the Rogers and Hammerstein concert (or at least a revised version of it). She opened with "A Grand Night For Singing" and she wore the red dress with the sequins on top and the long red train (the one she wore at Radio City) for this concert appearance!

As conductor Richard Kaufman sliced the air with his baton, leading the orchestra through the first half of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's season-opening pops concert at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center on Friday, the rest of us were marking time as well. It was Bernadette Peters' night, and everything else, even the opening act, was an afterthought.
Ms. Peters lived up to the impatience. She's the Tony-crowned queen of Broadway, but comes across as everyone's kid sister. She still looks like her voice should be squeaky-cute, so it's thrilling to hear it emerge in all its glory.
Conducting her hour-ish set was longtime friend Marvin Laird, who will be music director for next year's Broadway Gypsy, in which she'll play Rose.

Bernadette Peters opened the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's pops series with a splash Friday.
But "Rose's Turn" was not on the playlist Friday. Ms. Peters focused on Rodgers and Hammerstein, whose songs she recorded for a recent CD. She gave each tune her indelible treatment: ripe, tender, creamy, sparingly powerful, always intimate and heartfelt.
And she's as pleasant to watch as to listen to. She wore a floor-length gown of tomato-red taffeta with a glittery bodice, strapless to show off her milky skin, but she toyed with the dress ? "It's following me!" ? as if urging us not to take her glamour seriously.
With her voice cooing from offstage at first, she began, as does the CD, with "It's a Grand Night for Singing" from the movie State Fair. It was followed by "So Far" from Allegro, that "strange and interesting piece." It was all supple sweetness, but she wasn't satisfied with her performance. "I have a little piece of schmutz in my throat," she explained casually.
Though almost all the songs she performed are on Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein, Ms. Peters and Mr. Laird often varied the arrangements. "The Gentleman Is a Dope," also from Allegro, had more of a big-band sound. "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific was freshened by her unusual phrasing.
For her dazzling version of "There Is Nothing Like a Dame," Ms. Peters stepped offstage and doffed the gown; the sparkling bodice proved to be the top half of a skintight bodysuit. We didn't necessarily need that touch to be reminded, as the song says, that "There is nothing like the frame ... of a dame," but it didn't hurt.
And the teasing, insinuating delivery was delightful and peppered with surprising shifts in tempo and mood. "They didn't do it exactly like that in the show," she said. "But that's the way I sing it." Then that, Ms. Peters, is now the way it's done.
A wrong that cannot be repaired must be transcended.

Actually schmutz does not mean "flem." It is a Yiddish word for dirt.
