WOW! I saw the show for the 2nd time last night, after not having seen it for a while. The show is in incredible shape! The energy was and committment of the entire company was staggering...and Bernadette was even more powerful and moving than the last time I saw her in the role. ROSE'S TURN was just a powerhouse. Her work is mesmerizing, and there were nuances last night which were funny, touching, and so fresh. What a great artist. Last night was a unique thrill for me because we took my 7-year-old niece Lanie to see the show...and it was her first-ever Broadway show. What a spectacular performance to have as your first exposure to Broadway. Lanie is a bit of a seasoned theatregoer, having seen me, her Uncle Robby, in about a dozen local and regional shows in Pennsylvania--so her theatre etiquette is great. But to see her face light up when the orchestra started the Overture, and to see her smiling face, beaming after every number, was such a thrill for me...pure magic, and what theatre is all about. We waited after the show, and when Bernadette emerged, she was her usual friendly, gracious self. She was very sweet and responsive when we told her it was Lanie's first show. She was kind and charming, and said something to the effect that GYPSY was a great show for her to "cut her teeth on." She posed for a picture, and proved, yet again, that her generosity to her fans and her humility toward audiences is unparalleled, even when one considers how genuinely gracious and appreciative most NY theatre actors are. Bernadette Peters is one in ten million. Thank you Bernadette--and to sweet, kind John Dossett, who was so nice to Lanie...for making it a night to remember for a 7-year old child discovering the magic of Broadway for the first time. How wonderful it is, and how fortunate, that more people will now have the chance to see Bernadette's brilliant performance...Bravo to all!
