Hi all! I've been looking for information on Bernadette's 1960's singles. I recently fell in love with her track "Will You Care What's Hap'nin' to Me Baby?" on the compilation Where the Girls Are Vol. 5, and was wondering if any of her other songs from this period had been released on cd. Also, has Bernadette ever commented on these lost gems?

Glad you posted--I really love her sixties singles too. I'm not an expert, but as far as I know, there were only three. The first was the maddeningly elusive "Academy Award" released in 1962, when Bernadette was only fourteen. Apparently not too many copies were made, because I've never seen it for sale anywhere or heard of anyone who owned it. If anyone on the board has a copy, I'd love to hear more about it. Her second was "We'll Start the Party Again/Wait Johnny for Me" released in 1965 on ABC-Paramount. The first song is a Lesley Gore-like thing about a girl telling her boyfriend that now that her party is over, they can lock the door, dim the lights, and have their own private party. The second song she speaks, rather than sings, the lyrics to a background of the graduation march. It's about a girl whose boyfriend is graduating high school while she still has a year to go. This record briefly made the local charts in a few northeastern cities in the summer of 65, so there are more copies still around for sale--it's on ebay pretty regularly. It's also included on an earlier volume of the Where the Girls Are CD series. Her third and last single was the one you mentioned, which had on its flip side a song called "You're Taking Me for Granted". This one was issued in 1967 on Columbia, and is harder to find than the 1965 record, but I did manage to eventually obtain a copy, so it is out there. The sound of the 67 record almost reminds me a little of Petula Clark. It's amazing how well she could sing at such a young age, she's much better than the average "girl group" sound of that era. I would love to hear more from any one with more information on Bernadette's (unsuccessfull) attempts to become a teen recording star.

Thanks for all the info, Karen! I just discovered there was another single in 65, "The Trouble With Me is You" b/w "Our Song." According to the someone at Spectropop.com.:

'"Trouble" has (on both sides) Bernadette doing her best to sound like Bob Dylan (the angle at the time probably being "the female answer to......") - girl-group goes folk!'

Here's the link to that:

I hope these singles all make it to cd one day. They all sound intriguing. I agree, her voice was amazing even at such a young age.

Thanks so much John! This is the first I've heard of "The Trouble With Me Is You/Our Song", but it sounds great. Bernadette as a folk singer--I love it! One more item for my search list...
