Dear Gay and Judy,
I am a big Bernadette Peters fan. I am so glad that you have provided an official website for her fans. It is a treat and a joy. Her website is a little difficult to navigate, though. Could you provide a section for breaking news? When new information is available the fans might be able to find it a little more easily. On the main site page you could announce the date that the breaking news secion was updated. Thank you again for all of your efforts. They do not go unnoticed!
A BIG BERNADETTE PETERS FAN

Now that was nicey stated.

I actually don't think the official site is that bad. It's been getting more info lately (especially with Broadway Barks and Bernadette's television appearances). It clearly says, as soon as you go to it, when new info has been added; if you guys don't know which sections to go to, then I don't know what to tell you.

Perhaps someone can NICELY suggest that they add a section for questions...though chances are they'll just end up with a bunch of people saying how much they love Bernadette, and not get anything that would help the website directly.

I'm sorry, but I don't think moljul's response was nice at all. Saying that you could do it better without proof to back it up is wrong, and insulting to Gay, Judy, and Bernadette. If you don't like the official website, then don't go to it; though I don't know where you plan to get your factfull information from then?

I get it from here.

And I wasn't telling Gay my opinion. I was having a discussion with people on an internet chat board. Though if she reads this, then she will learn how several people feel about the site.

So what if you get it from here! That doesn't mean people have to stop expressing their feelings or thoughts on the subject.

Express away. That is exactly what I am doing. You obviously like the site or at least don't think it is as bad as I do. I don't feel that way. Kevin is the only person who has a right to monitor the content and postings on this board. No one else has the right to tell others what they can and can not post or talk about. And thank goodness Kevin runs a board that allows free expression and recognizes when people are discussing things as adults are prone to do.

I don't think the official website is that bad, it's obviously not "professionally done" as some other major stars' websites are, but it's much better than it was when it first started. I agree it could be more well organized though, and I personally rarely visit because it seems the fansites are more informative overall. But I do know how much work it is, I used to run an unofficial Bernadette site years ago that was VERY basic and I spent a lot of time doing it, and obtaining information to put on it, even resorting to calling her manager for information at times.

But it serves a purpose, to provide "official" information, so it's nice to have.

It's true, the fan sites are much more fun (lol again, thanks Kevin) But let's not forget, many (not all) fan sites get there info from official sites and sources.

This is going to be philosophical here. Bear w/ me. I can see the qualms that some of you have over the website design. Being a high school teacher and using the Internet with my students, I have encountered some of the "concerns" from students when doing research on line. IMHO I think it is society today and the need for instant information. People don't want to look for things anymore. When I see the update date, I go and look at the different sections to see what has changed. Does it take a few minutes longer? Yes, but I am alwyas glad to read whatever I find, so it's no big deal for me. My 2 cents.

I was just browsing through previous topics and thought I'd add my opinion here.

I love Bernadette's official site and I do think there is a lot of great information on it that I can't find anywhere else, but I agree...they definitely need to find a better layout. I am very grateful that there is a site at all, but I think if they are going to put in so much time and effort posting all those wonderful pictures and articles, they should organize it better so that people have an easier time accessing things.

I don't think that moljul was being rude or disrespectful at any point in the conversation, and I agree that professional people should be able to take some criticism. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Gay and Judy ARE paid to maintain this site, aren't they? It's not a hobby, right? Unless they are doing this out of the goodness of their heart, I think that people should be able to comment on how they would really appreciate a layout that is easier to navigate.

Ok, please don't misinterpret what I'm about to say. LOL

Doesn't it take a really nice looking website a lot of $$? I had a friend who ran a really niice Harry Potter (movie?) fansite, and she had to shut it down because she couldn't afford to pay for it to continue running. (but I know that's different in a way).

Maybe money plays a part in the quality of the site?- such as online tools etc.?..

Once again, I am NOT knowledgable in web design so I'm just wondering...LOL

Take care,
Stacy

Yes, it takes money to maintain a website because you have to pay in order to own a domain...for example, www.website.com. Obviously they are already paying for internet space because the website is there in the first place!

The real spending takes place when you hire someone to design the website for you. I don't really think they need a website designer...I just think it couldn't hurt to maybe organize! However, if they really wanted to make an impressive site, they should hire someone to help with the graphics and everything.

I don't really think they need anyone super fancy, they just need to make some minimal changes. I personally think the content they have is very good. Since it's done directly by her publicist, there are a lot of quaint things like "fan photos". If they did hire someone to completely redo the layout, I would hope they would keep things like that.

You know, I think (while the website Bernadette officially supports now is okay -- not great, but Okay) that maybe.... just maybe that site would benefit from merging with this site? Maybe?

Not that I'm implying Gay isn't working hard or doing a good job, but there's a lot to be gained by appointing a fan as webmaster for an official site, as opposed to appointing someone who may not have the time to devote to it, or may be stronger in areas other than webmastering.

For example: I do a lot for the X Files fan universe, and the Official Gillian Anderson website (that she herself endorses) is run by, and was started by, a fan. Her agent doesn't have the time nor the manpower to run it, so instead she had one of the fans (who had already established an extensive, professionally done website) do it. And actually, I think you'll find a lot of stars do it this way. It's just easier.

Look at it this way; who do you think really started the internet craze? The fans. Who creates the majority of the websites and spends their free time gathering information and photos and things for archival? The fans. The only difference between an unofficial site and an official one is that the star "officially backs" the official site, so all of the information there is approved by the agent. It doesn't necessarily mean that the agent (or the star) updates the site themselves, although a few actually do.

But since Bernadette has a charity, (ESPECIALLY since she has a charity) I really think she would benefit from perhaps having her official site merge with this one. (Not that I know Kevin's take on this, or Gay's, but I'm talking hypothetically here anyway.)

For one thing, I know (with the Gillian Anderson website,) an online auction is run on the website itself with Gillian's backing every year, and that she and her family and friends donate items. It collects money for Neurofibromatosis, her charity. The majority of the work (as in sending off the items and such) is actually done by the webmaster and the site admins, with occasional help from site regulars. Her agent has very little to do with it, beyond making sure they're abreast of the details and those in charge.

Gillian also does a "question of the month," which is sent through her agent to the webmaster, and is a great way to make online users feel "a part of the action" without her agent actually having to hire someone whose strengths may not be web design maintain a site. Fans are just more apt to update a site frequently, and some of them are more web-savy, and what's better -- they don't ask to be paid!

Basically, all I'm saying is this: while a website is not something a celebrity requires, it IS a nice thing to have. For both the celebrity and the fans. For the fans, it's a way to get up-to-the-minute official information and meet others with like-minds, and for the star it's a way to filter official information in a precise way. And (if the star supports a charity) it's an opportunity for them to generate money, and get the word out about their charity.

Again, I'm just talking hypothetically here. It just seems to me that since this web domain (Bernadette-Peters.com)is already owned, and run well, and updated, and also turns up ABOVE the officially sanctioned site on a web-search engine, that perhaps the two sites could merge. It might actually benefit Bernadette AND Gay, who runs the official site now. Just a thought. Please don't shoot me, Kevin.

It isn't necessarily expensive in terms of cash (I do lose several hundred a year on the site) but moreso in time. Updates need to get posted, email replied to and I have to keep an eye on the boards.

Thankfully I don't spend much money (if any) on overpriced website building doohickeys. I'm lucky enough to be able to program it myself.

I'm not going to shoot you, that was a nice compliment, really!

Kevin, you do such a wonderful job on this site! I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have this site to go to every other hour lol.
