From: northern VA | posted: 8/17/2007 at 5:50:57 PM ET Kate, I was in Houston when Rita threatened the city, so I well remember how difficult it is to evacuate that area. That city floods at the drop of a hat-there's nowhere for the rain to go. I heard that they are setting up contraflow on I-10 now. I contacted my friends in Houston-hoping to hear from them when they get home from work tonight (they are north of Houston, which traditionally doesn't flood as much as the other areas). I'm in New Orleans for the week visiting my family. I think an update was supposed to be posted at 4, so I'm waiting for the 5 PM news now!

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 8/17/2007 at 6:06:25 PM ET Sister Rose, that all makes sense, especially now when I remember that Sir Cameron Mackintosh was the "promoter" of Bernadette's Royal Festival Hall concert. But it's interesting that both Patti LuPone and Barbara Cook have played quite small venues here in London (smallish, "artistic" venues, you might say).
I notice that Bernadette often shares the concert with a "Symphony Orchestra". I should imagine that works well for both parties ... the local orchestra will share the evening with a "big name", which gets the concert attendance numbers up, and the "big name" gets a big orchestra behind them.
as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

From: NYC | posted: 8/18/2007 at 7:55:39 AM ET I think it's Kevin McCollum (Rent, Ave Q. In the Heights, Drowsy Chaperone) (I'll have to look in my CTI stuff) who owns one of the biggest regional theatres in the US - it's right in St. Louis, Karen. He started out as a booking agent and also has a merchandising business. He's one of the few big name producers now - one of the few who is wealthy from theatre producing without first being wealthy from something else. He said that even that theatre in St. Louis - 4000 seats? - has to rely on subscriptions and you have to be able to offer patrons big musical packages. Now its like most shows won't even tour unless they are pre-booked into regional theatres (part of the controversy with non-equity tours which only pay their performers around $500 a week or less) (and don't forget about Tony voters controversy). You can forget about getting big names on tours for the most part - producers and theatres can't afford it. A revival of a musical on Broadway costs around $6,000,000 just to get it started (so imagine a completely new and original show) and that's WITHOUT a star. Equity players are making around $2000 a week more or less. There are something like 15 or 16 separate unions working on Broadway - from the Actors and musicians to the ushers and stage people. Stars can make $20,000 a week or MORE. Most investors of shows don't even break even (Sweeney Todd did, but Company didn't) (plays rarely break even). First and foremost, Broadway is a business, but it's a risky one. 1000s want in, only a small percentage actually gets in and an even smaller percentage actually makes money in it, doing only it.
(Just FYI, I took the Commercial Theatre Institute (CTI) weekend intensive for producing this spring and have applied for the more long term program with the League of American Theatres and Producers.)

From: northern VA | posted: 8/18/2007 at 10:28:50 AM ET Kate, it looks like NOLA will be OK. They're still watching it, though. I am still concerned about my friends in Houston.
I am very, very worried about Jamaica.

From: Los Angeles, CA | posted: 8/18/2007 at 11:21:55 PM ET Well in my opinion this is the best Bernadette web page, but her The Official Site isn't updated very often especially with concert information which is why I asked where people find out about them.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 8/18/2007 at 11:29:38 PM ET Just kidding.
Actually, since we don't have an official "news gatherer" anymore, I try to take it on myself to do an internet search every now and then using keywords like "Bernadette Peters," "concert" and "2008." And voila!

From: Los Angeles, CA | posted: 8/18/2007 at 11:33:00 PM ET OK, I wasn't sure if you were kidding or not hehe. But thanks, I have Google alerts set up and it fetches some concert info but not a lot of the ones people have been posting, I thought maybe someone had some secret or something. Thanks!
(I dunno why the formatting got all messed up on these posts, not sure if it's just me or not, I think it's cuz I posted a link that didn't show up right.)
