I just wonder if perhaps Laurents really, really wanted to direct the 2003 revival but was blocked from doing that by the producers. After all the last thing Laurents has directed on Broadway was the notoriously bad, flop musical Nick And Nora way back in 1991. He may have been considered too old, too out-of-it and too impossible to be entrusted with the responsibility of such an expensive production with so much investment at risk. If that were the case then there's no way he would ever have had anything good to say about Mendes's direction.

I was wondering the same thing too. He probably wanted to do it after seeing Bernadette at Carnegie. After all he suggested Bernadette, and he was probably hoping that someone would suggest him as well. As cranky as he is, he was probably hurt (and a little insulted) that they didn't want him after he came up with the initial concept of having Bernadette (not to mention wrote the show). I kinda would/do feel bad for him. Still, I don't think that's an excuse for bashing the show. I don't know it's just a theory. However, it would also, maybe, explain Bernadette's lack of voice on this issue. I'm guessing she would know that he just says those things because he's still bitter and hurt. Hmmmm...all just theory though.

In other words, Mendes needs dolls to sparkle, Laurents likes to plant his own trees and make them grow, and the backstage toilet at the Shubert was always permanently stopped up? Sounds good to me!

Kate, you need to enroll in an intensive course in Camp Classics 101 (or at least rent Valley Of The Dolls).

Followed by The Legend Of Lylah Clare. (Arthur Laurents as Lewis Zarkan?)

I love that movie, one of Kim Novak's very best hammy performances.

But if we go down that Robert Aldrich road we may end up with "Whatever Happened To Baby Arthur" and that would be really scary!

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

I did see Valley of the Dolls along time ago when I was little, I just didn't remember the actual name of the characters. It's all beginning to come together now. lol.

I've seen All About Eve (It's an absolute must for anyone in theatre! One of my best friends went as Margo Channing for Halloween 3 years ago and I did his make up.) ...I don't remember any toilets though.

Haven't seen The Legend of Lylah Clare. I'll have to check it out.

And just a random tidbit, the Whatever Happened to Baby Gin episode of Will and Grace was on this morning.
