Oh boy. I can't wait for next year's revival race: A Chorus Line vs. Les Miserables!

Sweeney is not closing in a month - Patti is taking scheduled vacation in June and then also in August when she does "Gypsy" at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago. Her contract ends in July but she has repeatedly said that she hopes to extend because she has never been so fulfilled and happy as she is with this work. I think Sweeney is scheduled to close at the end of December unless something drastic happens. It is already considered a "hit" because they made back their investment. I have don't my part to insure this endeavor. In fact, Noah and I will be there on Tuesday night and expect to see a performance as fierce as ever.

And did y'all notice the tiny "Wednesday Adams" dancer/chorus person in the Three Penny number? That was Maureen Moore. All of us here tonight saw it and found it extremely intriguing and fascinating. It is not for the general public, and perhaps Sweeney isn't either. [Insert personal tyrade here].

Okay, the kids have gone back to their dorm, etc. and I'm taking to my bed with a headache and dread of work tomorrow. I still had a very fun day (hello bright side - I was in the same room as JULIE ANDREWS, PATRICIA NEAL, JANICE PAGE, GLENN CLOSE, AUDRA MCDONALD, PATTI LUPONE, BARBARA COOK, CHITA RIVERA AND, OF COURSE, BERNADETTE this morning). I also did enjoy the show despite the fact that my show and choices didn't win.

(oh next year - best revival - throw COMPANY in!!!!!)

I won't think about the Tonys any more tonight, "after all, tomorrow is another day".

We are experiencing a bit of a heatwave in London at the moment so after an unbearably hot and humid night I got up at 6 0'clock this morning and thought it would be fun to read your Tony Award reactions while I was having breakfast.

Thank you all for the very entertaining blow-by-blow account of the awards telecast!

You were all great but there can only be one winner - so this year's "Bernie" award goes to Karen for one remark that made me laugh so much I almost choked on my corn flakes!!!

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

Famous last words... but I think I finally quashed the "hidden message syndrome" that sometimes appears.

Sorry I have been so remiss in reporting back about my seatfilling experience. Monday was just a crazy day.

So I had a lot of fun. I spent most of the night lined up against the wall of the side aisle (audience left). The seatfillers were organized into 3 groups and throughout the night you were pulled from your holding area to fill seats. They actually only fill them during a commercial break. So once they go into commercial, those in charge start pulling us to fill in. You could be filling the seat of an upcoming presenter, a recent winner or just someone who went to the bathroom. If they come back within that same commercial break, you have to get back up and head to the back of the seatfiller line to work your way up again. But if they don't come back before the show comes back from commercial you get to sit for the entire next segment until the next commercial break. I got to sit 4 times but the first two were for no more than about 2 minutes. Finally on my third time I got to sit through an entire segment. That was fun because I was right across the aisle when Pajama Game won best revival. I thought I was on camera in the background and became self conscious for a moment because I realized I had a rather unenthused and shocked look on my face. Yes, that was a bad vote, wasn't it? The last time I was seated I got to sit through the last 2 segments of the show which were the best "Broadway Legend Wise". I saw Bernadette's segment and of course Julie Andrews segment as well. In fact she closed the show right in front of me. That was by far the most fun all evening. I was constantly surrounded by lots of fun people - I had to scoot around Oliver Platt, Christine Ebersole (the seatfiller walking in front of me accidentally stepped on her dress - it was huge), Anna Deveare Smith sat two seats down from me. Lots of people. However, before the show was the best celeb watching time as the aisle where we were all lined up was the aisle that most celebrities were taking to the stage door. I actually started to write down who was walking right beside me because I figured I would forget some. And I know I did forget a few because I didn't start writing them down until after probably 10 of them walked by me. So here is my list of celebrities who were literally right next to me or just a few feet away - Bernadette (looking VERY regal in her black gown), Dana Ivey, Bebe Neuwirth (she was on a cane for her walk down the aisle, I sure hope she is okay), James Earl Jones, Harry Belafonte, Patricia Neal (very frail but said hello to all of us), Julie Andrews (WOW!), Oliver Platt, Juliana Marguiles, Michael McKean and Annette O'Toole, Victoria Clark (her gown was really beautiful and so different from every else), Marian Seldes (LOVE HER!), Richard Thomas, David Hyde Pierce, Janis Paige, Harvey Fierstein, Hank Azaria, James Naughton, Joanna Gleason (really beautiful in person), Glenn Close, Jonathan Pryce, Chita Rivera, S. Epatha (forget her last name but you know the one - from Law and Order), Kyra Sedgewick, Jim Dale, Anna Deveare Smith, Dixie Carter and Hal Holbrook, Tyne Daly, Paul Rudd, Richard Griffiths, Cynthina Nixon, Marcia Gay Harden, Christine Ebersole, Lauren Ambrose, Michael Cerveris, Oprah Winfrey, Rita Wilson, Molly Ringwald, Brian Stokes Mitchel, Anna Paquin, Josh Lucas, LaChanze and later in the evening Julia Roberts was down by the stage door entrance but she didn't walk past me.

When we first arrived, we sat and watched the last little bit of rehearsals with stand-ins who were hysterical and phony winners. That was pretty fun.

During the commercial breaks they showed a lot of old commercials for old Broadway shows which was really fun too. Saw the original NYC advertisement for the original Sweeney Todd. Seth Rudetsky also had done some funny segments that they showed called Seth Rudetsky deconstructs the Tonys. For those of you who know Seth, you know he often deconstructs various pop culture programs to hilarious effect. His deconstruction of the Brady Bunch Variety Hour is one of my favorites. The one I mostly remember is when he showed a clip of Liza Minnelli singing a concert and not blinking for over 30 seconds (they had a clock timer in the corner of the screen) pointing out that because it was the 70s, she actually had two pairs of eyelashes adding to the weight of her lids therefore making the feat even more impressive. Before the show started they ran a video with the Tony rules including telling the winners to make it to the stage quickly (and showing a funny clip of Ben Vereen literally leaping to the stage during a past tony telecast) and just funny things like that. I guess from all your posts that you found the telecast boring but I have to say I found the whole show very interesting and it moved along quickly. I was NEVER bored. So I guess the show live and in person (much like theater itself) is better.

I'm sure I'm leaving off lots of details but that's all I can recall right now. If anyone has any questions, let me know as it might help trigger some other memories.

And I must say: I watched Sister Rose's video and HOW CUTE IS THE LITTLE CURTSEY!!! ADORABLE! But that's "our" Bernadette. She looked great on Sunday and I was glad to see her great sense of humor in both the rehearsal video and the Tony gift shopping pictures coming through. She's obviously been so solemn lately.

I saw several of them walking to the party as I was walking on the same street trying to get a cab. However, you had to have a ticket to get into the Gala. I plan to apply again next year but I don't know if it will be easier or not.

And yes, no pictures. Just my memories.
