From: northern VA | posted: 6/11/2006 at 11:03:58 PM ET I have to say that this is the first Tony broadcast in some years in which there wasn't one new musical that I really wanted to see, or at least buy the recording.
The only segments that I really stopped what I was doing and watched were Sweeney Todd and Threepenny Opera. Threepenny was a bizarre segment, but I've always really liked Cyndi Lauper and have, of course, heard some of the score.
Well, knowing that Bernadette recycles her gowns, I'm hopeful that we'll see it again.

That entire show was boring, inept, desultory. No wonder the audience is dwindling away.
And so many of the awards were just enraging.

And now Noah is MIMING out ROSE'S TURN. I don't know if he had anything to drink....

From: northern VA | posted: 6/11/2006 at 11:14:03 PM ET Well, I guess I'll buy The Drowsy Chaperone, but I usually make a run the day after the Tonys to B&N to pick up any recordings that I didn't have from the current season. I have Jersey Boys-listened to it once. I have Sweeney already. Threepenny's recording isn't out, I think (are they making a recording? I hope so.)

Yes, yes. And Patti does not need a Tony (A Tony for Sweeney, however, might have helped the box office.). She will continue on, and I'm guessing she has the same attitude. This is certainly not the most devastating thing that has happened in her career.
Still, I wanted her to win. Not that I've seen any of the performances, so that's not entirely fair. And my reasons for wanting her to win are purely tied to emotions, which is not a reason why anybody should win. But I am trusting those who have seen her performance, though.

Registered: 5/3/2004 | posted: 6/11/2006 at 11:27:26 PM ET i have seen both LaChanze's and Patti's performances and in my personal opinion, Patti should have won. The performance was just more deserving of the Tony.
another thing, Bernadette- adorable!- i, too, would've loved to see her bedazzled in the fabulous black dress, but she bedazzled in the gold as well!
p.s.- Julie Andrews looked stunning.

From: northern VA | posted: 6/11/2006 at 11:31:17 PM ET I'm looking forward to Miss moljul's seat filling tales.
Once I am settled in Virginia, I am planning on taking a weekend trip to New York via Union Station in DC. I am really hoping Sweeney is still there, even though Patti may not be there once I get a chance.

From: NYC | posted: 6/11/2006 at 11:42:31 PM ET And about the rehearsal - they practice announcing the nominees and then announce a fake winner then the fake winner comes up and accepts the award with a fake speech - it was a blast. Much more fun seeing that then the actual show. They have to practice how much time it will take, etc. All of the "theatre" people showed up for their rehearsal while none of the "tv/movie" people did - as in no Julia, Paul Rudd, Oprah, etc..

So the best new musical is a schmaltzy jukebox show that looks like it belongs in a Las Vegas lounge. And the best revival is a tacky, tarted-up, miscast production of a nice but distinctly midlevel chestnut.
