(I hate it when the local symphony hogs time before Bernadette's performance - Houston did that and I thought I would die w/ anticipation!)

From: NYC | posted: 9/18/2005 at 9:12:34 PM ET I think Bernadette is a great comedienne. I must note that I too noticed that her humor doesn't always translate on the stage - however, I think that it depends on the audience. I saw her in Boston and everything she said was extremelely well received and she got huge laughs. A week later in Houston, the same jokes didn't work at all.

| posted: 9/18/2005 at 9:14:08 PM ET Whew! I've just got home from Norfolk and I was all set to write up a glowing report, and I see that Jean has already written up a great one herself!
It's funny, I was also going to say that "Some Enchanted Evening" was a suprise high spot - a song I hadn't paid so much attention to on the album, but the version last night was absolutely spell binding. "Nothing Like a Dame" was another one that really took off on stage like I hadn't heard before. I also noticed some timing problems here and there, and judging by the way she was looking over at Marvin I got the idea that there may have been some volume problems on the stage. It never really put her off too much though, like a pro she smoothed right back into it. Her comedic timing was always spot on - even the old "and this is my back" gag was still a hoot. She was certainly in great voice, the last notes of "Unexpected Song" knocked my socks off. Oh and of course she was spectacularly gorgeous. As if that even needed mentioning.
Did anyone see her after the show? We were a little intimidated by Chrysler Hall and didn't try to hang around afterward.

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 9/19/2005 at 11:19:31 AM ET I too made it to Norfolk and took notes (Jean, you missed one song in your list – "No One is Alone" – sung after "Let Me Entertain You," and comments about the last time in Norfolk meeting the astronaut-to-be from Ozone Park and promising to take her CD into space, and before "Nothing like a Dame").
Similar perceptions: Her voice was really strong, and seemed to get stronger as the evening progressed. Strongest midway for two songs, I thought: "Time Heals Everything," which gave me goosebumps, then "Some Enchanted Evening." I too was very taken by the song that night and thought it was better than her recording of it on "BP loves R&H." She really hit those last couple of notes -- some of my favorites in music -- beautifully.
The couple next me commented on how great she looked when she came out; the woman seemed surprised. I was a bit concerned with "Let me Entertain You." I thought the sound system was off, sounded cavernous. But, if that was the problem, it was righted with the next song. I thought with "Dope" that she started with the wrong verse, so she stopped herself. There was one song that I think her voice cracked on one note because she was so emotionally into it but pulled it together quickly, I just can't remember which song; "Not a Day Goes By," I think.
She talked before "Mr. Snow" about sneaking downstairs as a little girl to listen to the record of "Carousel" and hearing "The Carousel Waltz" and thinking "she'd died and gone to heaven." I appreciated that because I really love that piece of music, a favorite Richard Rodgers.
Maybe it was the news of the last few weeks, but I was really into the lyrics of "With So Little to Be Sure Of" too.
She didn't react much to the guy upfront who blurted out 'You are hot' in a long pause in "Dames," so I thought maybe I'd heard it wrong. It was just before she does the really low notes. That was the best rendition I've seen her do on tape and TV of that song. I thought maybe because she was singing it in a Navy town. Anyway, afterward, she said in "South Pacific," "they don't do that song that way," but "that's the way I do it." Very cute. and got a good laugh. The "this is my back" joke was interesting; the laughter sorta built, it grew in a kind of wave.
"Fever." Oh. My. It was better and more amazing than I had imagined. And I loved the Romeo and Juliet "kisseth" verse. The audience around me were rather senior, and I thought, whoa, none of these men are gonna need Viagra tonight! I didn't think that I would ever hear a better rendition than Peggy Lee's original, but damn, as far as I'm concerned Bernadette owns that song now.
I didn't wait around either, though I thought about hunting a stagedoor or limo; didn't look like a great neighborhood to be a lone female, but mostly I still had a 3-1/2 hour drive back home.
Great evening. I was tired Saturday, and almost talked myself out of not making the long drive, but was afterward very happy I did. Actually I enjoyed the symphony concert too; I live in the boonies and appreciated the high-quality musicianship. It was only 45 minutes (then 15-min. break, then Bernadette from 9 to 10:20; see, I took notes). "Rose's Turn" (she changes her shoes and puts on the black sweater while doing the intro to the song) and "Count your blessings" were the encore. The audience was up for more. Lots of good comments from the crowd walking out. She made some new fans I think.

| posted: 9/19/2005 at 12:18:40 PM ET I think you are correct, SingOutAnnie - during "Not A Day Goes By" she covered her face for a couple of seconds and looked tearful, and then sort of quickly shook it off. It was quite a moment actually.
My gosh, I feel for you that you had to drive three hours home after that show. We drove about five hours to get there. It was completely worth all of it. The Tazewell Inn, just a few blocks from the concert, gave us a really good rate on a really nice room. After a scotch and a snack I slept pretty hard!

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 9/19/2005 at 1:13:58 PM ET When I got my ticket some weeks ago, I'd fully intended to make a weekend of it in Norfolk, but I have been working my tail off (hah, I only wish that were literal and not figurative) and as the weekend approached, I just got feeling like, go in, go out. Still, the concert pepped me up so much, the drive back seemed to go a lot faster. (Well, there also wasn't a 20-minute traffic delay near Williamsburg, a long, long train I got stuck behind in Norfolk, then getting lost -- all the while, thinking I'd be late -- yet another reason I liked the symphony being on first!)
OK, I feel better. It was "Not a Day." I thought it was nearer the end, so I figured it must be. I even thought her nose and upper lip were red on that song too. When her voice cracked that one time, I thought, 'oh oh, she's not going to make it though,' but she seemed to take a breath, and quickly and purposefully get control back, which was, of course, all the more dynamic.
"...for all they're worth." I heard a couple of women talking, going out the doors, and heard one say, "She's a showman, a real showman." Yep.
That was my first time seeing Bernadette live in concert. It doesn't get much better than that, folks.
Please share your photos, leebee. Even bad ones would be good.

Registered: 6/11/2002 | posted: 9/19/2005 at 10:29:42 PM ET Since I'm the biggest music dork in the world, I have to ask: Was there an Overture (and what songs were in it) and what was the curtain call music?
| Jean Registered User
Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 9/20/2005 at 7:07:35 AM ET the songs in the Overture:
1--several bars I don't know
2--Some People
3--Move On
4--Look What Happened to Mabel
4a--a few bars of Carousel Waltz
5--From A Little Night Music, I think it's The Sun Won't Set
6--Broadway Baby
7--When Mabel Comes in the Room
8--offstage voice--ladies and gentlemen, Miss Bernadette Peters!!!
Curtain call, or final bows, walking out of theater music--I think Being Alive.
Very similar, if not exact, to the overture that you hear on Sondheim Etc Etc.

From: Bradenton/Sarasota, FLA | posted: 9/20/2005 at 8:18:22 AM ET Jean (thanks for id'ing the overture pieces), you answered your own question: 'What kind of question is that anyway??'
How 'bout this answer: I'll take her performing any way I can get it. (I'd lean toward the story, but then in most musicals, she wouldn't be on stage the whole time as in concert.)
In both instances, it goes by too, too fast.

| posted: 9/23/2005 at 1:26:45 PM ET Here's a question that someone will hopefully be able to answer:
It is illegal to take pictures at a concert? I know it is at Broadway or other professional theater productions but that is because the sets, costumes, etc. are copyrighted. Audio recordings are illegal because the music and book, etc are also copyrighted. But is someone's one night concert under the same jurisdiction.
And as for the benefit concerts. Why would taking pictures be wrong or illegal?

| posted: 9/23/2005 at 2:02:59 PM ET I would think if it were illegal (i.e. punishable by law) they would state that, as it makes their position stronger. I've noticed that when something is actually illegal that the notice is written as "prohibited under statute/state law blah". I think prohibited, in the general sense, means "this is our rule and if you violate it, we have the right to impose sanctions against you" but they can't prosecute you for it. Just my 2 cents, but IANAL.

| posted: 9/23/2005 at 2:22:36 PM ET There is the very real danger of flash photography blinding the performer and causing injury. I'm sure it would be too much trouble to monitor who is using flash and who isn't so they just do a blanket refusal of all photography.
Thanks for all the feedback.

| posted: 9/23/2005 at 3:46:03 PM ET The announcement prior to the performance said "no flash photography", which we took to be our cue to go ahead and take pics as long as the flash is off! I actually have a few more pics that are pretty nice too, I just didn't want to blow out Kevin's mailbox!
I got a pretty good recording of the show too. I have a little digital set-up that I record the local orchestra concerts with, and it fits very nicely in my suit pocket. I've played the Norfolk concert a few times already and it is very listenable.
Alot of artists will tell you that they are very understanding about recording shows, even enthusiastic about it. That said, you can get tossed out of a venue for it if you get caught. What really irks artists is when surreptitious recordings of poor quality, poorly produced pop up on Ebay and elsewhere as "rare" items with big dollar price tags. Irks me too. There is a very nice music trading community of respectful, enthusiastic fans who exchange live music recordings, and selling this stuff can really spoil that community.

You made my day (after several really, really lousy ones).
