Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 6/23/2004 at 8:56:05 PM ET Good question. Now if only I knew the answer. There doesn't seem to be much of anything left. Maybe magazines and long-form journalism in general are just dying. On the internet, BroadwayStars.com is useful because it links to so many things. ArtsJournal.com is a good way to keep up with daily arts news (it has a section on theatre). But as far as magazines, I really can't think of any. I definitely don't recommend Show People--I subscribed for a year and hated it. Like I said, it's a good question, and if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them too.

| posted: 6/23/2004 at 9:21:37 PM ET There is Show People Magazine. It's a quarterly magazine, and not very rich in content; but it does have some great photos and interesting stories. Bernadette graced one of their covers not too long ago.
It's not terribly expensive either.

For the best information on theater, there is no better place than the Internet, particularly Broadway Stars,Playbill Online,TheaterMania and the message boards,on occasion. Very frequently, the information in Show People is outdated, since it's quarterly. It does have nice pictures. It is also run by Clear Channel (just FYI if you have concerns about Clear Channel).
Playbill has a monthly magazine-nothing special.
TheatreWorld Internet Magazine is a good place to go to read about theater in the UK as well as continental Europe,Asia,Australia and New Zealand, etc (heavy on UK theater. Also has a quite gossipy forum).
As for NYC magazines-TimeOut NY is a good one. It's a weekly publication. Liberal slant for the most part (if you care one way or another). The focus is on entertainment, and a great bulk of the magazine is listings for film, literary, visual arts, dance, and theater events. Restaurant reviews are also included. Every issue has a theme-one may be on apartment hunting,a recent one was on summer festivals, etc. I enjoy reading it and I don't live in the city. But I didn't pay for the subscription.
There are the old standbys-The New Yorker and New York Magazine.
It's just too bad that Theatre Week and Show Music are no longer in existence. Those were fantastic magazines. But the Internet is the best place to catch theater news. Even though I have a feeling you're like me and would rather read print magazines! Internet sites, for the present, just don't offer in-depth interviews that print magazines can offer. Film buffs are lucky-they have quite a selection. If you're not interested in the more academic aspects of theater, there really isn't anything out there, although The Dramatist looks intriguing. I've subscribed to Show People and Playbill, and haven't renewed the subscriptions.
TheaterMania
Broadway Stars
Playbill Online
TheaterWorld Internet Magazine
Directory of theatre-related journals/magazines
However-and not at all what you were asking for-I did find
this during a search for theater magazines and am totally comtemplating buying it. And I don't play computer games. I just had to share this, since I've never heard of it before. You must read the reviews section to see how truly fantastic and theater-geeky this must be.

Thank you so much for the through review! I have loved Broadway since I was little and do look at some of the websites (thanks for giving me some new ones to try!). I just signed up for a free trial of Time Out NY. Thanks for all your help!

I hope you enjoy TONY. It's a fun read.
There is an excellent theater magazine that I didn't mention, because it's geared toward high school students (it's published by the Educational Theatre Association-bless them. I loved their Theatre for Life campaign.).The main audience is made of middle/high school drama students, the majority of whom are planning on becoming professionally involved in the performing arts. Here's the April issue's table of contents. The issues correspond to when the students are in school (the majority of subscribers are schools rather than individual students- the issues are published when school is in session. There is a May issue.). PDF files of selected articles are available here.
This is another magazine I don't personally subscribe to,so that's my take on it. I used to read this in high school, and it was a gem (drama teacher subscribed to it,and back copies were stored
backstage). It's as old as God (well, since 1929-it's had a few title changes) and a great support for drama students. Your library may subscribe to it,so check there (quite a few libraries subscribe to Playbill, and may have back issues of Show Music and Theatre Week as well. Even if you think it probably doesn't,check anyway. Dallas Public Library is an example.). I have to keep up on magazines geared toward children and teens (which-and whom- I love!),so I don't know of what interest this would be to you. So I'm just throwing it out there,if you're desparate for something to read. I think it's interesting, because it takes teens seriously, and high school drama students don't always get that kind of encouragement. And I always learn something from it. Do any of the students on this board read the magazine?

They are so thoroughly researched, and so well organized and presented. You said you always learn something from that magazine, well, I always learn something from your posts. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort.

From: Bethel Township, PA | posted: 6/26/2004 at 3:00:10 PM ET I completely agree with Karen....very well stated. All of your posts have been very helpful. Not only do I love Broadway and theater myself, but I am also the assistant drama director at the middle school I teach at. I will have to ask my librarian to order the magazines you suggested. Thanks again! ~Kristen

Thank you. You guys are too much. It's really no trouble at all.
Kristen-the Educational Theatre Association website might also be of interest to you. They also publish Teaching Theatre, which is a quarterly magazine.

I came across these magazines recently:
City Magazine
Gotham Magazine
Paper
Gotham has 10 issues/year. City is 6 issues/year. Targeted audience is very different from TONY (Time Out New York). Upscale,fashion-conscious audience. So YMMV,depending on your interest. Paper is 12 issues/year,and is a bit similar to TONY in that it is more entertainment-focused than the other two magazines I just listed. It also covers theatre, books, art, film, etc. It appears to be hipper-than-thou,which may turn some off,of course (TONY can be hipper-than-thou too). The first two seem more fashionable-than-thou,but that's just my first impressions,of course, and I just looked at sample issues. They're fun to look at,if they don't cause great envy and anguish-or disgust, whatever the case may be. Take a look at their archives (if available-Paper has some archived articles) for more info.
Of course,I'm not saying that you're not hip or fashionable.
Did you get your TONY issue yet?

Thanks again for your research and descriptions. I did receive my free trial of TONY and decided to subscribe because it was a special for 50 issues for $19.95 instead of the normal price of $29.95 (I believe). I enjoy the theater parts and am starting to branch out to other sections of the mag as well.
I also bought a copy of Show People off the rack when I was in NYC this summer...not very impressed
I will check out your new finds. Thanks again!
