Playbill and Broadway.com's announcement left room for some speculation ("Tony Award winner George Hearn will become the Wizard of Oz in the hit musical Wicked beginning July 20") and I didn't know if anyone could clarify this for me.

| posted: 7/9/2004 at 3:49:44 PM ET I don't know for sure but this would be my guess. Joel Grey has bronchitis and is on leave for at least 7-8 weeks. I supposed it is too early to tell how quickly he will recover so they are probably leaving the door open for Grey to bow out of Wicked if needed. Recovering from bronchitis is a long process and Joel Grey has to be around 70 years old, making it an even longer and more unpredictable process.

| posted: 7/9/2004 at 5:47:06 PM ET Well considering that contracts are up on July 18th (which is when Kristin Chenoweth and Norbert Leo Butz are leaving), it is possible that even though Joel Grey was supposed to continue on until January, that they allowed him to renegotiate his deal and end his run in July.
Perhaps he doesn't feel well enough to continue with the show.
Whatever his decision, I hope he gets better.
And maybe he'll come back again later in the run. I'm being semi-selfish, but I wish I was going to see him in the show next Sunday when I go.

| posted: 7/10/2004 at 11:34:20 AM ET I just got tickets for Wicked and it still said on all the notices that he is leaving on Jan. 2 2005. But they could have changed it and just not updated anything yet.

| posted: 7/10/2004 at 11:25:04 PM ET I was at the show today. It is official that he will not be returning to Wicked. I really enjoyed Joel's take on the role, but I must say the understudy was excellent. The man who's been filling in will not be the new Wizard, but someone will be taking over the role permanently on July 20th.
