Pennies From Heaven is an awesome film. It's a little off beat but I think its brilliant. Steve Martin plays Aurthur, a guy who is unsatisfied with his marriage. He meets Eileen, Bernadette's character, a very shy girl, a school teacher, and someone who underneath it all is an extremely sexual person. Aurthur falls for her and her for him, however she doesn't at first know he's married. He ends up getting her pregnant and she has to leave home and her family. She winds up selling herself for money and the baby is, as they put it in the film, "gotten rid of." Steve Martin's character ends up being framed for murder and sentenced to death. Through all their troubles, the characters live through the songs of the depression like "Pennies From Heaven" and "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries" and the darkness of the film is contrasted with flashy and happy song and dance numbers. Bernadette's performance is brilliant (I believe she won a Golden Globe! for this role) and I found the movie quite interesting and creative. There is also a great number with Christopher Walkin if you're a fan of his. I hope you enjoy it!

She actually won a Golden Globe Award not an Emmy. Emmys are only for television and Pennies was a theatrical release. I agree with everything you said. It is a rather bizarre movie but if you can get into the quirkyness of it, you'll be able to see what a great movie it is.

if you don't like seeing people pretending their dead - look away when a torch is shone in Arthur's eyes by a policeman. The shot of the blind girl scared the hell out of me!!!
And also, Eileen (as lulu) says the baby has been "gotten rid of" which I think is even more sad. Great film though - you'll think about it for ages!

they say bernadette's wonderful..........and she is
