| posted: 6/14/2003 at 10:31:48 PM ET I just got home from today's matinee and I am speechless! It was the most incredible day of my entire 17 years of life! I was in the fourth row. I had never seen Bernadette perform live before so this was a very big treat for me! I started the standing ovation for Rose's Turn and had the whole Shubert Theatre on their feet! Bernadette looked right at me and gave me a little smile too cause I was the only one standing for at least two minutes of applause and then everyone else stood! It was the greatest moment ever! I spend literally $150 on souvenirs lol and I was screaming and cheering so much that at the end the people in front of me gave me the garter that one of the strippers threw. I cried when they gave it to me because I thought that was so sweet of them. I didn't get to meet Bernadette but I tried to get backstage and asked at least 20 people about how to get back there and it just didn't work. I met John and Tammy and got my picture with both of them so I was thrilled and John wrapped his arm around me and I freaked out a little. I am just so thrilled and excited still and I want to go and see it again! This time during a night performance so I can meet Bernadette!

It's really cool how you got the garter belt and how you started the standing ovation! I'm so sorry you didn't get to meet Bernadette but I'm sure she was glad to have seen you there cheering for her. I hope you get to meet her the next time you go!

| posted: 6/15/2003 at 2:12:16 PM ET That sounded so exciting. I always want to start the standing ovation for Rose's Turn, but I don't and I have never seen a standing ovation for that song (other than the Tony's). It's just that, like you said how she looked at you and realized you started it...that's what kind of keeps me from doing it.

Registered: 6/11/2002 | posted: 6/15/2003 at 9:05:47 PM ET For some reason, I have never been shy with giving Bernadette standing ovations. The 3 times I have seen her in concert, I have always given her standing ovations for songs that I believed deserved some special recognition. Most of the time, I'm the only one standing!
I saw her in Indianapolis this past October. When she made her entrance, I rose to my feet instantly and I quickly discovered that I was the only one standing! And I didn't care! It was wonderful, and the best part was when she came out and took her 3 bows, (Stage right, center, and then stage left) she looked right at me in the 10th row, smiled, and waved! It made my night!

Actually -- this kind of reminds me of something Pheobe said on the TV show Friends (when she "ran really funny" and Rachel didn't want to be seen with her.) "What do you care what these people think when they see you? You'll never see them again."
I suppose it's the same thing (for me) with something like giving a performer a standing ovation, even when nobody else is doing so. Performers really appreciate when someone genuinely appreciates what he/she is doing. When a few people (or one person) stand for a performer after a song, it means that they REALLY were touched by the performance. Not that they saw everyone else standing and realized that they should stand, too, but that they loved the performance so much they wanted to show their appreciation by standing, even if nobody else was doing so. They know it takes guts, and they appreciate it.
So I say -- if you love the song, stand up for it. You'll never again see the people in the audience (who you might feel momentarily embarrassed in front of) but you'll certainly give the performer something to smile about for the rest of the evening. And then, after the show, you'll know that the performer saw you, and that if he/she smiles about it, he/she'll be smiling about YOU. Or at least, that's how I see it.
When I go, I'm definitely standing up at the end of 'Rose's Turn.' I certainly did so in my living room, and if I don't care about making a fool out of myself in front of family members, why should I care whether I do it in a theatre where I'll never see any of these people ever again? Bernadette's worth it, I say.

I still have another year of undergrad school and then I would love to move to NYC, of course I don't know how I'll ever be able to afford it....but we'll see!
And I couldn't agree with you more about giving a performer a standing ovation. If one is genuinely moved by a performance, then I think they should stand up and clap away. I don't think anyone should worry about making a fool of themselves....it's wonderful if you are touched by a performance.....so stand up and cheer away!!!
