I'm feeling scared and unreal at the moment. Kinda "out of it". I don't feel like me. I don't feel myself. Its a frightening and bewildering feeling I was wondering if other people here have shared at some time or another?

When my father died I was 15 and my Mother when through months of panic attacks and so on. I was guaranteed to be in the emergency room with her at least once a week.

I learned some ways to calm her and help her through this.

#1 usic seemed to help distract her and give her something to focus on.
#2. Prayer would help calm her down as well.
#3. Not being alone. When she was feeling that way I would always try to be around. It happened mostly late at night so I would make sure she woke me up.

Although these did help the only thing that truly helped her get through it long term was finding the right doctor and medicine.

I also learned through this that my Grandmother (Mom's Mom) suffered from it as well. So I am very careful just in case it runs in the family.

It is a little personal but I hope it helps.

Keith

Jenny,

Do you think that maybe the Medication you are on are having a side effect? I mean the other Meds gave you neck spasms, so the new one might be causing you to feel that way.

You should call your doctor.

Five years ago I suffered the first of an attack a day, and was in the emergency room of three different hospitals over a ten-day period, zillions of tests with no diagnosis. I went to see a former therapist (right in the middle of an attack--I was totally out of it), and wanted her to put me in the hospital. She told me it was a panic attack, and sent me to a "psychopharmacologist," who put me on medication, gradually, until I no longer had the attacks. I'm still on the medication, and through behavior modification therapy am slowly overcoming the horrible fear that is their catalyst. Most important thing to do when it happens is try to concentrate on your breathing, although I know it's easier said than done. Try to keep breathing deeply and know you are not going to die. (That's what panic sufferers feel.) If these feelings persist, I'd suggest going to a doctor--a psychiatrist would determine if you need meds, and would monitor them very carefully. It's not in your head, and although you may feel like you're going to die, you will get through it. I literally got my life back with the help of the meds. There are many websites on panic attacks that will help you, too. Just do a search for "panic attacks" and check them out. You'll see you're not alone. Good luck!

Hi- I had labyrithitis many years ago- not to scare you but it lasted for close to 3 months for me. I actually couldn'tsit up for 2 weeks. It's vertigo. I don't know how badly you have it but for me everytime I moved my head I felt like it was moving thru a bowl of jello. I'm not sure what meds you had but I had antivert and it made me feel horrible- very disconnected. I just stopped all meds and let the disease take its course. It's caused by a virus and it can either be an inner ear infection or an infection that is settling on a nerve that helps with balance- the vestibular nerve. Often times with a virus the meds just treat the symptoms vs kill the virus like an antibiotic kills bacterial infections. But the bottom line is- the medicine may very well be bothering you and the illness itself makes you feel miserable. You feel every movement your head makes. Hope this helps.

Hello. Thank you everyone. I'm reading "self help for your nerves" by Dr Claire Weekes - a very clever woman who has passed away now. Don't worry, Jean - I'm very close to my parents and they know all about it. I just wanted to see if other people have felt like this. Its just comforting to know I'm not alone because its a very lonely feeling when you feel like your trapped inside yourself. Claire Weekes' theory is that you should just accept the feelings and not fear them because it is through fear that the feelings are extentuated. I have felt like this 2 years ago and I got over it. I think its just a little relapse because I was so frightened by the whole experience. What I think I'm suffering from most is "recessive thoughts". They go back and back in your head until you feel a sense of "identity loss". Its all in your mind because you're so tense. I'm naturally a nervous person anyway - I'll just have to learn how to relax and lay worrying thoughts to rest.
In hindsight I don't think posting this was such a good idea. I was very scared and on edge yesterday evening when I wrote the last few posts. Oh, and I am on medication - the controversial "seroxat". and it does seem to help.
