She doesn't need to be reminded that she lost the TONY.Its almost like throwing it in her face....whether that was his intentions or not. And I'm sure that's probably why she left so quickly after the TONYS were over. Who really wants to be reminded over and over and over again that they did not win an award?? I am assuming that most around me agreed with this considering all the dirty looks he got and not one person joined him. I even saw a few people from the cast and crew throw him some looks.

I'd have to agree that Monday nights show was phenomenal. However, the show was almost all sold out even before the TONYS. From what I have been told they really only had rear mezz and balcony seats( and very few orchestra seats) left on Monday. Seeing as Gypsy is one of the few shows playing on Mondays and that many people were in town to see the TONYS anyway its really no surprise it was sold out. Don't get me wrong...I'm sure many people were totally moved by Bernadette's performance that they went and got tickets but I don't think this was the driving force behind ticket sales for Monday nights show. The show has played to standing room only audiences many times. The applause Bernadette received when she first walked down the aisle that night was truly moving...you could see the sheer looks of pride the cast had on their faces and you could tell Bernadette was definitely touched by it all. She actually had to start speaking her liens to get the audience to stop clapping and cheering. I've never really been to a performance of this or heard of a performance where the audience was not generally very responsive ( in a positive way). For the most part...I think the nay sayers such as Reidel going to see this show is minimal...the audience really seems to be enjoying the show a lot!! The jokes in the show have even been getting applause! There are so many unbelievably talented, very respected and hard working individuals ...even legends working on this production and that totally shows!

| posted: 6/10/2003 at 2:35:00 PM ET Hmm. I was under the impression that they have had very few SRO shows according to the box office and the weekly grosses and occupancies posted on Playbill. However I'm sure a majority of the tickets were sold before the Tonys but I felt the appreciation displayed by the audience was one of support and a sort of "Go to Hell, Michael Reidel" sentiment. I've seen the show several times and often with very good audiences but nothing compares to the performances or the audience response from last night.
You are right when describing what seats were left after the Tonys but as of yesterday morning there were several in the back mezz and a great deal left in the balcony. So all those were purchased on Monday and I would like to think as a direct reaction to what was seen on the Tonys the night before. The show didn't sell out until 7:50 last night.

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 6/10/2003 at 2:49:52 PM ET Regardless really of when the tickets were sold...it was standing room only and that's what counts.I do know that at the very least Saturdays are almost always completely sold out. Most shows do not completely sell out until last minute because of the release of house seats and what not.
I personally don't see the response she got on Monday as a spite to Michael Reidel..I thought it was an honest response from an audience who felt she plays the hell out of this role and deserves the applause. I certainly don't applaud for her to show Michael Reidel up...that would sort of defeat the purpose. I did feel though, that the audience, as at every performance I have attended has been very supportive of her. So I do agree with you there. Especially the first time she got sick and the applause she got when the curtain rose for act 2...that was definitely something to see! I'd have to say though...the opening night audience was definitely the most responsive ( that I've seen)....for every number!! Both Robert Fox and Ron Kastner were in attendance on Monday...as well as some family members of the cast and crew and all had the same looks on their faces...not anger or disappointment about the TONYS but astonishment at how great the show is and pride for those who have contributed to such a wonderful production.

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 6/10/2003 at 3:09:35 PM ET I just don't feel audiences are giving Reidels comments quite as much consideration as some seem to think they might be. At this point, I think most people are pretty much fed up with him and don't even bother with what he has to say about this production anymore. His shock factor has pretty much ran out. Bernadette has proved over and over and over again that she CAN play Rose and play the role INCREDIBLY well. I really do not believe she or anyone else needs Reidel's consensus to prove that. The show is doing very well. I believe last week's grosses were up by 5%...That in itself should speak for how the audience feels...especially in a time where shows open and close so often without a second thought. I'm sure your post was definitely not meant as a kudo for Reidel and I knew that wasn't intentionally where it was leading...however,I just think the last thing Reidel deserves is to be credited ( in any way)with the positive response Bernadette has gotten during performances( even if it was in spite of him). Just my view....

Was a pleasure. I've been saving some of the pro/con, interesting/outrageous Gypsy Peters posts from some of these sites so I'm glad it came in handy.
So who's going back to see the show next?

I have to laugh at some of the posts I've read about this b/c they have gotten so ridiculous. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I think to attack that opinion is ludicrous.

Registered: 4/1/2003 | posted: 6/11/2003 at 12:42:08 PM ET The show is enjoying very healthy box office sales, but there are VERY FEW sellouts over the next month. Seats in the orchestra section, halfway back or farther, are available at quite a few shows in June and July. As the summer crowds (hopefully there will be some!) descend upon NYC, I think it will get even better and bigger.
