She has the right balance of fiestiness charm, and her voice seems born to the role!I've often wondered why she wasn't chosen befor this?!
As to Sam Mendes directing, I'm somewhat apprehensive as I did not care for what he did to the role of MC in "Caberet"! He made it crude ,as contrasted to the original worldly but sophisticated role that Joel Grey played so well! And Gypsy Rose Lee was an elegant stripper,so I hope she has not been made to be crude and cheap! Am planning on seeing Gypsy in July so will let you know MY critique! In the meantme,HELP Steve and Arthur!!
To the loveliest lady of song!
You will keep on giving me joy forever...

Having seen Gypsy 6 times before (Merman, Giselle Mckenzie, Lansbury-London, Lansbury-New York, Daly, and Lavin) I believe that this productiion may end up being the best. I loved the sets -- after all it is "a backstage musical" Bernadette Peters "acted" many of the songs instead of just singing them -- Sondheim should be proud.
I believe the show had become too old fashioned and stale -- this new production's approach is fresh and new, and I believe, after a month, will be praised. Bernadette Peters may be seen as the greatest Mama Rose.
