(1) I had only seen a regional production of Gypsy previously (I don't count the movie, such a different medium), so I wasn't prepared for how great this play is! I'm a sucker for show-business, backstage stories anyway, but this production is terrific. You really get the feel for the backstage, sometimes seedy life, along with the proper (to me) setting for Louise's transition to "Miss Gypsy Rose Lee". By that I mean the curtain and lighting.
(2) I was quite taken with the 3 strippers, who provided needed comic relief; Tulsa (Burtka) was charming in his wonderful number (would that be Jerome Robbins looking on and smiling?), and Tammy Blanchard was a fine actress, not quite selling her numbers yet, but wait... She won the audience's heart when she sang "Little Lamb", and the lamb kind of bahhed along. I confess to having a slight crush on John Dossett, so enough said that he acted, sang, and partnered splendidly. The rest of the cast was fine.
(3) Hmm-what else-Oh...I think that Bernadette Peters gives the best performance in the hardest role I've ever seen her do. She acts with a scary emotion and vulnerability, and "realness", sings beautifully, and provides that special "star" sparkle, and really touched me.
What a gift she has given us!
(4) Technical odds and ends--Hair was fine, as described by others, costumes were appropriate, some quite flattering (the dress when she and Herbie are eating alone and the final scene purple), wonderful strong colors that look good on her -she does favor the browns, doesn't she?-and materials, that look like silk and satins, that move nicely. The shoes remind me of dancing shoes. Probably one too many hats, then I started thinking that some of them were funny-not sure that's what was intended.
Well, as you can tell, the show, and especially Ms. Peters involved and reached me on many levels, as great theater should do. I seem to have lost a bit of perspective here, and isn't it fun...I already look forward to my next viewing in late May.
(And now on to "Follies" today--yes, Sondheim is my real passion.)

The costumes (color and style wise) are appropriate to the time. This show is set during the depression...don't you read Variety? LOL
*anyone who saw the show got that joke*
I think the dress she wears in the restaurant is actually new (in comparison to the one she wore during the first preview); then again, it could be the same dress & I just don't remember.
I also loved the purple dress. I think they chose to do mostly browns and dark tones during the entire show, and then purple at the end because it's a more vibrant color (necessary for when she sings "Rose's Turn"). It's a great color on her.

Both the matinee and evening performances must have been great by all accounts. Now I kind of wish I had chosen it instead of the Friday performance but oh well.
