let's hope the brief interruption of rehearsals won't affect the Gypsy Preview schedule.

It only affected about 2 and a half to 3 days of rehearsal...depending on how long and if they had rehearsals on Friday or today at all. They probably really only missed atleast part of Friday's rehearsal and all of Saturday and Monday. So I'm sure that if previews are delayed at all it probably won't have anything to do with the strike. Atleast the strike didn't take place during the really crucial period of rehearsals.Which are coming up. Some of the backstage crew do not start working with them in rehearsals until a week before the first preivew so I'd say they should be OK. And also, they've had, or well, will have about 3 months of rehearsals behind them( for Bernadette, even more) most shows usually only get about 6 weeks of rehearsals before they begin previews. This is a revival thats been done many times before too( granted it will have changes for this production I'm sure) but many new shows don't even have all their songs or lines completed yet during rehearsals...atleast Gypsy has this advantage

Yeah! Maybe I'll go up to the city this weekend for a little "pre-finals-week" fun and see a show or two, then.

I would just like to say that I had mentioned the strike would hopefully be over by Tuesday and I was right! Not to brag or anything LOL
I think I need to see a show this weekend also, to continue support for musicians and shows. I was going to see Cabaret this past weekend, but it didn't seem right. There are so many shows I want to see rigt now; it's driving me crazy!

For the minimum of 18 or 19 musicians. there's more to it then that but I really don't have time right now to explain it all. Maybe later.

Deal Brings The Sound Of Music Back To Broadway

MARCH 12TH, 2003

After an all-night negotiating session with an arbitrator at Gracie Mansion, Broadway musicians and producers have reached a tentative deal to end a strike that left musicals dark for four days.

For the first time since last Thursday, the curtain rose on all Broadway shows Tuesday night.

“There were two sides to a dispute, and in the end both of those sides understood that we have to live together and work together and that not dispute operates in a vacuum – there are third parties that have to be considered as well,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who intervened to end a walkout that cost the city’s tourism industry millions of dollars a day.

The four-year deal is a compromise on the main sticking point of employment minimums. For the next 10 years, producers have promised to hire at least 18 or 19 musicians at the largest theaters – down from 24 to 26 – with some flexibility for “special situation” musicals.

“This was an extremely difficult negotiation lasting over many, many meetings since the end of January,” said Jed Bernstein, the head of the League of American Theaters and Producers. “Neither side got what everything it wanted; neither side was able to get through this without making significant compromises. Ultimately, as the mayor said, that’s what a fair negotiation is all about.”

Producers – who initially wanted to end mandatory hiring altogether – had offered a minimum of 15 on Friday, but the musicians went on strike, fearing they could eventually be replaced with recorded or computer-generated music.

“Technology doesn’t always win, and it didn’t win this time,” said Bill Moriarty, the head of the union, Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians. “While we have made some reductions in the house minimums, we have preserved live Broadway, we continue to have the largest staff minimums in the world, and we will continue to provide the best music that you will ever here in your life.”

The union for actors and stagehands had joined musicians on the picket lines, closing the curtain for all Broadway musicals except for “Cabaret,” which has a separate contract.

With lost ticket sales and a ripple effect at hotels, restaurants and gift shops draining millions of dollars from the economy of the cash-strapped city, Bloomberg invited both sides to meet at Gracie Mansion Monday night for non-stop negotiations. The talks were mediated by Frank Macchiarola, the president of St. Francis College and a former city schools chancellor.
