BP is doing an excellent job on this. I LOVE everything about FOLLIES and listen to it daily.

Young Sally doesn't threaten suicide. She actually attempts it.

BEN
"She said she'd kill herself. I didn't know she meant it."

It's just difficult for me to see why he would toy with her so horribly. He know she tried to commit suicide because of him once a long time ago.

He should of acted like he didn't remember her and called her Sandy all night long and been a complete jerk to her. Not lead her on.

I LOVE her voice in LOSING MY MIND.

I'm with you on BP.

I meant the threat was an attempt at manipulation...the attempt was past that, of course (at least that's my way of seeing that). I think when she threatens it, she thinks Ben might change his mind, confronted with that. When he doesn't...

I think we're definitely all in agreement about Bernadette being absolutely brilliant in the role of Sally.

I know what you mean, Jennifer, about the way Ben leads Sally on in "Too Many Mornings." But I think because Sally is needy and a little bit insane, she allows herself to be lead on and get a false sense of hope. Of course, it doesn't help that Ben actually tells Sally he loves her. That's just the nature of the Ben Stone character; he's a jerk. "Too Many Mornings" is a truly heartbreaking moment in the show.

It is difficult to try and reason why Ben would mess with Sally in the way that he does, but that's what makes the show so good. The dynamics between the two couples is enthralling.

ripley, you just spoiled the illusion for me. I thought for sure you were Alice.

I see Sally as being depressed and Ben making her insane. Ben gives her hope by saying all these sweet things to her and then at the end says "I never loved you". What?
At the end Sally FINALLY realizes how Ben really is

SALLY "...there is no Ben for me, not ever, anyplace."

You're so right. : )

Sally's Sassy Gay Friend

This is pretty much how I see it.

LOL! I would love to see the look on Bernadette's face if Sally's Sassy Gay Friend made an unexpected appearance in the middle of "Too Many Mornings."

If Sally is being manipulative by attempting suicide she is a horrible manipulator.

I see Sally's attempt similar to the movie "Splendor in the Grass" when Wilma Dean tries to kill herself after Bud dumps her to be with Juanita.
Sally has that young intense love for Ben and doesn't want to go on if he isn't around.

Yes, but unfortunately for Sally, she can't have Ben.

I feel bad for Buddy. You can tell exactly how Sally feels about him just by the pause she takes when, upon her entrance, introducing herself. "I'm Sally Durant...Plummer," says it all.

Of course Sally and Ben will never be together. It is written that way.

I just think that the character of Sally isn't really a manipulator. I can think of at least 7 ways to manipulate the situation that don't involve suicide. I think the suicide attempt was an act of depression not manipulation.

I also think it takes strength for Sally to be completely in love with Ben and have an affair and never let Phyllis know. A weak person probably would have told Phyllis everything after Ben gave Phyllis the ring. Phyllis doesn't know there was anything between Sally and Ben until 30 years later.

I don't think the "Sally Durant… Plummer" line is a knock at Buddy. I think she is saying you might remember me as Sally Durant, but adds Plummer as an after thought to show that she got married. Although, I can hear the disappointment in her voice when she sees that Buddy has shown up and says "Buddy…you came".
I see the Buddy character as Sally's protector. He confronts Ben for her and his nickname for Sally is "kid". I think Buddy sees Sally as someone that is extremely vulnerable and needs to be protected.
I also think they all remain married after they walk out the door.

That's interesting. I wonder what James Goldman had in mind for the two couples.

I don't know, but I like that I can draw my own conclusion. I really like this musical and it is becoming one of my favorites.

I agree with you, Jennifer. I think the two couples remain married. Just curious as to James Goldman's thoughts on the subject.

I can't get enough of FOLLIES. I saw the show again tonight and it was absolutely fabulous! Bernadette was terrific, of course, and I just love the way Elaine Paige plays Carlotta. Also, Jan Maxwell's "The Story of Lucy and Jessie" is one of my favorite numbers.

AMH, you are so lucky you got to see the show again. I can't wait until it comes to LA so I can go and see it again.
Did Jan Maxwell do a cartwheel at the end of "The Story of Lucy and Jessie"? I heard she did a cartwheel and was wondering if that was a one time
thing or if she has added the cartwheel into the number.

I'm pretty sure she did a cartwheel. I could be wrong, but I'm almost 100% positive that she did. (I'm a little bit embarrassed that I can't remember.)

I was so happy to see the show again. Living in NC makes it fairly easy to make a weekend trip up to NY.

Have you heard any cast updates on the Los Angeles FOLLIES? I just know Terri White is going, but haven't heard anything about anyone else.

Hi,
No, I haven't heard anything about who the cast for the L.A. production is going to be. I think it should be announced soon. Tickets go on sale sometime in January.

How long does it take to get from NC to NYC? It seems kind of far to me.

The flight is under two hours from where I am in North Carolina, so that's not too bad.

I'm really curious as to which members of the principal cast will transfer to Los Angeles. I don't think Jan, Elaine, or Danny will go; not sure about Bernadette. Also, I could be wrong but I think Ron has something going on during that time.
