"Fame Becomes Me" is a FUN show! I loved it and my sides are still splitting from laughing. Bernadette looked great - chic black dress. "Jiminy" asked her what she thought about Steve Martin and she said "Well, you knew him." She got a big laugh out of that one. She kind of danced with him. No song. The whole evening was a blast and it was just what I needed. It's a horrible rainy evening so I didn't do the stage door. Renee, Christine and Lindsey were all there.

Well, that's a good start, but we need more info. Like maybe a second-by-second rundown. Come on, people!

I'll second that!

1) What was the audience reaction?

2) Was it Brooks who got her from the audience and did they interact?

3) How long was the sketch (in June or July, when I saw it with a non-celebrity, it was about 10 minutes long)

4) Oh you know, just give us the minutia that I love!

5) Last but not least, did she seem to be having a good time?

I hope this is ok to do--posted by "jwilson" on ATC this morning:

"It was a pleasure seeing Martin Short and Bernadette Peters back together on Broadway last night. She was there with Arthur Laurents, and Bernadette looked stunning in a short black dress and heels that went halfway up the proscenium. She is as gorgeous as ever.

She was a game guest for Jiminy Glick, who asked (or more precisely in Glick comical fashion TOLD HER) about key points in her life and career. He asked her what it is like to be a living legend and mentioned that she shares a birthday with Mama Cass and Twiggy (claiming that “Mama Cass ate Twiggy”). He inquired about her work as a child star, and Bernadette hedged, stating she was not exactly a star, “just a child.” Jiminy Glick snapped, “We were all a child, Bernadette—you’re not giving me anything new here.” He also asked about her big break, which she said was DAMES AT SEA, and this garnered a good deal of applause.

He mentioned other shows, including SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE MICHAEL and THE GOODBYE GIRL in which she starred with that other guy, Martin Short. “You walked away with that show,” Jiminy told Bernadette. “He was doing his same old stuff.”

Near the end of the interview Jiminy asked what it was like to work with Steve Martin, and she replied that he should know since he worked with him. He reminded Bernadette that he was Jiminy Glick not Martin Short (being played at that moment by a waving, supposedly comatose Marc Shaiman!), and the interview concluded with some comical banter about “making” THE JERK. Before exiting the stage, she did a spirited soft shoe with Jiminy (in those impossibly high heels, no less).

This was a real treat, and well worth slogging through the rain and holiday crowds to get to the theatre. This was my second visit to the show, and it holds up well."

She was with Arthur Laurents --interesting.

That's because she's the only person left in the world who's still willing to socialize with Arthur Laurents. Everyone else has given up in disgust.

I lucked out cause I bought my tickets last night and got in the front row and it was amazing! Yes, she was with Arthur Laurents and they appeared to have the whole row to themselves...Brooks did pull her up on the stage which was sweet. It was so nice to see Bernadette so happy and laughing! She looked fantastic and I loved her shoes! Oh and she had on cute glasses too but took them off when on stage. the whole scene was about 10-15 mins and the post above pretty much covered the whole skit.

When it was over, I bumped into her in the audience and just said hi because she and arthur where being pulled backstage. I did wait in the pouring rain at the stagedoor and didn't let the rain bother me. The stagedoor guy from the shubert theatre during gypsy was there and mean as ever. I was so glad to see an old poke him in the eye with her umbrella. Then, the whole cast came out and pretty much ran to their cars cause of the rain and the stagedoor guy said ok that's it. well, i know from experience never to trust that man so I waited and 5 mins later out pops bernadette and arthur. she smiled and waved but just walked down the street with arthur and the stagedoor guy followed. some man then poked bernadette in the eye with their umbrella! and i wanted to kill him! bernadette was annoyed of course but kept on going. i had a bus to catch at port authority so i just so happened to be walkin in the same direction and she turned around and smiled and waved at me, but i think her and arthur might have been going to eat at maybe angus cause they turned on 44th and i had to go in a different direction. soooo that was pretty much everything lol sorry for the novel and i'm sure run on sentences!

OK, I have to say I am so interested in and bemused by that statement about Arthur Laurents... what, on earth, has he done?

And "Twiggy" was mentioned in the same breath as Bernadette???

What a contrast of talent in those two women, Berandette and Twiggy? ...( And I say this (fondly) as someone who can count the webmaster of Twiggy's official website as one of my closest friends.)

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

I think Laurents has an unsheddable reputation as a foul mouthed, cantankerous, old know-it-all; almost impossible to work for or deal with. Apparently his longevity hasn't mellowed him or pushed him into the "so old now he's almost lovable" category. Too bad I don't have any snappy anecdotes to illustrate my point--I'm sure Laurents has inspired some pretty colorful ones.

Just putting my two cents in...

What a fun evening! From seeing Bernadette arrive and being ushered to her seat to the final bow, just a great evening only made better by Bernadette being the celebrity guest! She was so beautiful in her "little black dress" and high heels and I love that Brooks got to introduce her.

Thanks, Karen. .... and he looks like such a nice old boy too.

My welcome diversion from the Christmas festivities around me (bah! humbug!) will be to escape to this room and track down some info on Mr Laurents. Wasn't he photographed with Bernadette at some event or other a week or so ago?

About Laurents: I really can't say anything, as I haven't heard or read anything about him. However, when his memoirs came out, the folks on the internet (especially, I think, ATC) really made much fun of him and his liasons...

Original Stories By: A Memoir

slight correction--I did read the memoirs, and also read a few gossip columns during the previews for Gypsy when he was said to be unhappy with the production. I don't know how much of the gossip column stuff was true and how much was exageration. His memoirs sounded a bit like --boasting--.

Thanks, Jean. I've ordered that book - looks like a good read. Just a thought (and not a serious one) maybe Bernadette is wise to be keeping on the right side of him - God forbid she ever do anthing to displease him! Looks like he just lets rip at whatever and whoever the minute he gets his hackles up. Ah, I like a little bitter bitchiness - especially at this sugar-loaded time of year!

Here's one more photo from the opening of Vertical Hour:

playbill.com

(I spent one Christmas and New Year's in London, probably in mid 1990's--other than more places being closed than we had anticipated, it was quite lovely. But Hawaii was better a year or so later!)

Well, nice to be hearing from you folks over there, I realize it's your afternoon but we're just getting started here.

Bernadette is positively towering over Arthur in that picture! ... She was wise to wear her hair "up" - it looks like David Hare's wife decided to give her some competition.

Hawaii is definitely a better bet than London this year too - all week we've been fog-bound and freezing cold. But you would find it different now from the 1990s - we are certainly more 24/7 this century.

as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....
